{"id":343695,"date":"2021-09-23T23:15:19","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T20:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/how-sleeping-less-than-7-hours-a-night-can-lead-to-weight-gain\/"},"modified":"2021-09-23T23:15:19","modified_gmt":"2021-09-23T20:15:19","slug":"how-sleeping-less-than-7-hours-a-night-can-lead-to-weight-gain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/how-sleeping-less-than-7-hours-a-night-can-lead-to-weight-gain\/","title":{"rendered":"#How sleeping less than 7 hours a night can lead to weight gain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#How sleeping less than 7 hours a night can lead to weight gain<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/sleep-quality.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Sleeping\u00a0fewer than seven hours a night can lead to poorer\u00a0snacking choices, researchers say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the analysis of data on nearly 20,000 American adults showed a link between not meeting recommended sleep guidelines and eating more snack carbohydrates, added sugar, fats and caffeine.<\/p>\n<p>While salty snacks, sweets treats and non-alcoholic drinks were found to be the same among adults regardless of sleep habits, those getting less sleep tended to eat more snack calories per day overall.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jandonline.org\/article\/S2212-2672(21)00545-1\/fulltext\">The data examined<\/a>\u00a0in the study was taken from 19,650 U.S. adults between the ages of 20 and 60 who had participated from 2007 to 2018 in the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/nhanes\/index.htm\">National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to questions regarding the average amount of nightly sleep during the workweek, 24-hour\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/nutrition\">dietary<\/a>\u00a0recalls were taken from each participant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt night, we\u2019re drinking our calories and eating a lot of convenience foods,\u201d Christopher Taylor, Ohio State University (OSU) professor of\u00a0medical dietetics\u00a0at the\u00a0School of Health and Rehabilitation <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a>s and senior author of the study,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/928988\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only are we not sleeping when we stay up late, but we\u2019re doing all these obesity-related behaviors: lack of physical activity, increased screen time, food choices that we\u2019re consuming as snacks and not as meals,\u201d he added. \u201cSo it creates this bigger impact of meeting or not meeting sleep recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Taylor and OSU co-authors Emily Potosky, Randy Wexler and Keeley Pratt divided participants into those who did or did not meet sleep recommendations based on their reporting and used U.S. Department of Agriculture\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/data.nal.usda.gov\/dataset\/what-we-eat-america-wweia-database\">databases<\/a>\u00a0to estimate participants\u2019 snack-related nutrient intake, categorizing all snacks into food groups and establishing three snacking time frames.<\/p>\n<p>More than 95% ate at least one snack a day and more than half of snacking calories among all participants came from two categories including soda, energy drinks, chips, pretzels, cookies and pastries.<\/p>\n<p>Those who did not meet sleep recommendations were more likely to eat a morning snack and ate higher quantities of snacks with more calories and less nutritional value.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeeting sleep recommendations helps us meet that specific need for sleep related to our health, but is also tied to not doing the things that can harm health,\u201d said Taylor, a registered dietitian. \u201cThe longer we\u2019re awake, the more opportunities we have to eat. And at night, those calories are coming from snacks and sweets. Every time we make those decisions, we\u2019re introducing calories and items related to increased risk for chronic disease, and we\u2019re not getting whole grains, fruits and vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research Society\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jcsm.aasm.org\/doi\/10.5664\/jcsm.4758\">recommend<\/a>\u00a0that adults sleep seven hours or longer per night on a regular basis.<\/p>\n<p>Less sleep is associated with a higher risk of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\">health problems<\/a>\u00a0including weight gain and obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/features\/getting-enough-sleep.html\">The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0noted that poor sleep can also be linked to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/about_sleep\/chronic_disease.html\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>, diabetes, depression and other\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/sleep\/data_statistics.html\">chronic health conditions<\/a>.\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
