He is often called a \u201cunicorn\u201d by NFL talent evaluators because of his one-of-a-kind package of speed, strength, jumping and other receiver skills in a tight end\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go back and watch his college tape it becomes really scary,\u201d Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham said, \u201cbecause all those cornerbacks that get drafted in the first round, that\u2019s who all those teams in the SEC had covering him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Five of the first 44 picks in the 2021 NFL Draft were SEC cornerbacks.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can the Giants do? Put struggling Pro Bowl cornerback James Bradberry on the 6-foot-6, 246-pound Pitts instead of on top receiver Calvin Ridley? Give up a huge size advantage with No. 2 cornerback Adoree\u2019 Jackson? Ask safety Jabrill Peppers or slot cornerback Darnay Holmes \u2014 both of whom have been benched in the past for blown coverages \u2014 to try it? It\u2019s a tale as old as time \u2014 or at least as old as a 7-year-old.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>An Antrel Rolle-led secondary finished No. 25 defending tight ends, per Football Outsiders, in 2014. A Landon Collins-led secondary allowed 1,062 yards to tight ends in 2016 and 13 touchdowns to tight ends in 2017, including a stretch of 10 straight <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s with a touchdown catch by a tight end.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in Year 2 under Graham, a familiar problem is rearing its head at the worst possible time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big-body tight end is always good for an offense,\u201d Peppers said. \u201cQuarterback\u2019s security blanket, a big target in the red zone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Giants allowed 80 catches for 866 yards and four touchdowns to tight ends last season, but the early 2021 numbers are alarming. The Denver and Washington tight ends have a combined 16 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns through two games.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the Pitts.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Podcast\" width=\"100%\" height=\"188px\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.acast.com\/blue-rush\/elimanningtalkscareer-giantsringofhonor-broadcasting?accentColor=2a2a2a&amp;bgColor=f6f6f6&amp;font-family=proxima%20nova&amp;logo=false&amp;secondaryColor=cc3333\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden;\"><br \/>\n        <\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The Giants listed WR Kenny Golladay (hip), TE Evan Engram (calf) and special teams ace Nate Ebner (quad) as questionable on the injury report.<\/p>\n<p>Golladay missed the final nine games of last season with a hip injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went through the whole hip thing [before signing him] in free agency,\u201d head coach Joe Judge said. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s anything tied to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>Peppers, the emotional leader of the Giants defense, was solemn Friday as he addressed reporters.<\/p>\n<p>Read into it what you will about the mood of the team after an 0-2 start feeding into a 18-48 five-year run.<\/p>\n<p>His message boiled down to this: The Giants need to get better every week.
