Sign up to get it delivered straight to your inbox in the morning. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>It is starting to look like\u00a0<strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> will face a concerted effort to oust him after he failed to make gains in Monday\u2019s election, because someone is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MercedesGlobal\/status\/1441199327590764549\">working<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JPTasker\/status\/1441157954766454794\">the phones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are few critics in caucus speaking publicly, yet, although\u00a0<strong>Chris Warkentin<\/strong>, MP for Grande Prairie-Mackenzie, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.movies.yahoo.com\/grande-prairie-mackenzie-mp-criticizes-163629363.html?soc_src=social-sh&amp;soc_trk=tw&amp;tsrc=twtr\">told<\/a>\u00a0<em>Town &amp; Country News <\/em>that the party started to struggle when it backed away from Conservative positions.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was when our party leader started to waffle on some of the policies that we had brought forward and hadn\u2019t been clear that I believe that Canadians became uncertain and unwilling to continue to look to our party as an alternative,\u201d said Warkentin. \u201cI believe that that was the beginning of polls shifting back in favour of the Liberals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sherwood Park\u2014Fort Saskatchewan\u00a0MP\u00a0<strong>Garnett Genuis<\/strong>, who was the 2017 <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> Parliamentarian of the Year, by the way, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/09\/23\/conservative-mp-urges-party-to-unify-around-otoole-as-others-question-his-leadership\/#.YUz1y55KjFv\">told<\/a> CP that MPs should avoid \u201canother round of internal conflict or public navel gazing,\u201d CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/09\/23\/conservative-mp-urges-party-to-unify-around-otoole-as-others-question-his-leadership\/#.YUz1y55KjFv\">reports<\/a>: \u201cWe must learn the lessons of the election, share constructive feedback, and remain united behind Erin O\u2019Toole,\u201d he tweeted Thursday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leslyn Lewis<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/100222008179889\/posts\/387195359482551\/\">spoke up<\/a> for O\u2019Toole on Facebook. <strong>Michael Harris<\/strong>, the former Ontario premier, has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/mike-harris-lets-unite-behind-erin-otoole\">a column<\/a> in the <em>Sun<\/em> backing him. CBC has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/conseratives-split-erin-otoole-1.6187155\">a roundup<\/a> of Conservative infighting news.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Weren\u2019t ready:<\/strong> At TVO, <strong>Matt Gurney<\/strong> has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/article\/election-post-mortem-part-1-a-tory-insider-talks-candidly-about-campaign-missteps\">meaty post-election tick tock<\/a> from an unnamed senior Conservative insider, who acknowledges that the argument over guns set the campaign back.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some of that is just stuff we have to get better at. But particularly on gun control, that\u2019s a complicated issue, because some of that stuff gets hammered out with negotiations with caucus, right? And if we need to change policy on the trail, we can\u2019t just do it on a whim. So there is a process, and that takes time. But I think your analysis is basically right. <strong>We weren\u2019t ready for questions we should have been ready for<\/strong>. And the Liberals pounced on that. They\u2019re really good at this.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Were ready:<\/strong> <strong>Tonda MacCharles<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Levitz<\/strong> have some good\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal-election\/2021\/09\/22\/guns-gravel-and-old-fashioned-hustle-the-inside-story-of-how-justin-trudeau-stopped-erin-otooles-momentum-and-held-on-to-power.html\">behind-the-scenes stuff<\/a> from unnamed senior Liberals in the <em>Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">\u201cIt\u2019s the old <strong>Mike Tyson<\/strong> quote, right? \u2018<strong>Everybody\u2019s got a plan till you\u2019re punched in the face.<\/strong>\u2019 So we got punched in the face early on,\u201d a senior Liberal strategist admitted. \u201cAnd then it was, \u2018Okaaaay.\u2019 Different campaign than we maybe we were anticipating. Kind of a regrouping h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Liberals very online:<\/strong> Also in the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Susan Delacourt<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2021\/09\/23\/liberals-used-an-old-trick-to-turn-the-election-around-in-the-campaigns-final-days-they-knocked-on-doors.html\">has some info<\/a> on the Liberals\u2019 digital campaign, which, Liberals say, was better than the digital campaigns of their rivals.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">\u201cThe Facebook ad library shows that in the 90 days before election day, the Liberal campaign invested $4.12 million on Facebook and Instagram (nearly as much as the other two parties combined), compared to $2.63 million for the Conservative campaign, and $2.13 million for the NDP campaign.\u201d As well, Liberals say, their party had more than 14,800 iterations of Facebook ads in that same time frame, compared to about 1,400 for the Conservatives and 1,250 for the NDP.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Questions about Singh:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, Lawrence Martin has a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-if-anyone-should-be-stepping-down-its-the-likeable-jagmeet-singh\/\">column<\/a> asking some questions about <strong>Jagmeet Singh\u2019s <\/strong>election, and wondering if\u00a0<strong>Alexandre Boulerice<\/strong> should replace him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who, exactly, is the idiot?<\/strong> Twitter\u00a0put\u00a0<strong>Maxime Bernier <\/strong>in the penalty box for 12 hours and made him delete a tweet that called reporters idiots and shared their contact information, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/09\/23\/twitter-takes-down-maxime-bernier-tweet-that-called-reporters-idiots\/#.YU0ODp5KjFv\">reports<\/a>. Bernier\u2019s tweet led extremists to bombard reporters with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/C_Somos\/status\/1440796753419137027\">vile messages<\/a>. Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8216186\/bernier-ppc-journalists-racist-doxxing-play-dirty\/?utm_source=%40globalnews&amp;utm_medium=Twitter\">reports<\/a>\u00a0that flying monkeys in far right social media spaces were happy to do Bernier\u2019s bidding.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In another, separate screenshot, users in a discord chat celebrated Bernier\u2019s decision to share the emails. That group, according to Balgord, is a \u201cyouth white supremacist group.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFind me another political leader doxxing journos kek,\u201d said one user. \u201cWe\u2019ve got his back he has ours it seems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Cabinet speculation:<\/strong> At Global, <strong>David Akin<\/strong> has an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8215340\/george-chahal-arielle-kayabaga-lena-diab-trudeau-cabinet\/\">admirably thorough article<\/a>\u00a0speculating on which newcomers might end up in cabinet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three days later:<\/strong>\u00a0SNC-Lavalin Inc. and two former senior executives\u00a0have been charged with a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/fr\/news-releases\/enquete-agrafe-2-de-la-gendarmerie-royale-du-canada-le-directeur-des-poursuites-criminelles-et-penales-depose-des-accusations-861500727.html\">fraud and forgery offences<\/a> linked to a 2002 Montreal bridge contract, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-snc-lavalin-two-former-executives-face-charges-related-to-montreal\/\">reports<\/a>. A deferred prosecution agreement is in the offing. <strong>Brian Lilley<\/strong>, writing in the <em>Sun<\/em>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/torontosun.com\/opinion\/columnists\/lilley-snc-lavalin-and-former-executives-charged-days-after-federal-election\">finds the timing suspicious.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ex-MP guilty:<\/strong> Former Liberal MP <strong>Marwan Tabbara<\/strong> pleaded guilty Thursday to assault after a \u201cderanged\u201d and terrifying nighttime attack on his former spouse and her new boyfriend, the <em>Post<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/canada\/former-mp-tabbara-pleads-guilty-to-deranged-attack-on-former-girlfriend-and-her-boyfriend-gets-no-jail-time\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vuong should quit:<\/strong> A lot of people think <strong>Kevin Vuong<\/strong>\u2014who got elected as a Liberal in Toronto although he\u2019d been dropped by the party\u2014should quit, because of\u00a0a dropped sexual assault charge. Global has the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8215940\/kevin-vuong-ousted-liberal-resign-calls\/\">story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Signs of our failure:<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s,<\/em> <strong>Paul Wells<\/strong> has a grim recollection of a journey to Afghanistan, where so many things went wrong.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To be fair, any attempt to do the math led to increasingly discouraging results. Afghanistan was a mess on a scale beyond comprehension. A desperately poor country whose median age is under 20 had been occupied by successive waves of outsiders for longer than most Afghans had been alive. Millions of Afghans had learned rational lessons from watching armies come and go: allegiances must shift because circumstances would. Money or influence must be used while available because neither would last.<\/p>\n<p>The 37-member Western coalition constantly told itself its tens of thousands of soldiers and civil servants were there only to assist the Afghan government. This was transparent fiction, beginning with the notion of an \u201cAfghan government.\u201d We\u2019d walk into a cabinet minister\u2019s office and there\u2019d be a U.S. army officer, huge and wearing desert camo, standing in the background, saying nothing after he introduced himself. \u201cI\u2019m the minister\u2019s advisor,\u201d the soldier would say. <strong>If the human and strategic stakes hadn\u2019t been so high, the result would have seemed like some epic satire of government inefficiency<\/strong>, the career-capping novel Franz Kafka never finished.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Stephen Maher<\/strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
