{"id":344196,"date":"2021-09-25T02:02:21","date_gmt":"2021-09-24T23:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/why-working-out-may-not-help-as-much-as-you-think\/"},"modified":"2021-09-25T02:02:21","modified_gmt":"2021-09-24T23:02:21","slug":"why-working-out-may-not-help-as-much-as-you-think","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/why-working-out-may-not-help-as-much-as-you-think\/","title":{"rendered":"#Why working out may not help as much as you think"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Why working out may not help as much as you think<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A new study of how\u00a0physical activity\u00a0impacts the\u00a0metabolism\u00a0of humans suggests that increasing levels of activity may bring diminishing returns in energy expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>This is due to \u201ccompensatory responses in non-activity energy expenditures,\u201d international researchers wrote in the study, published in August in the journal Current Biology.<\/p>\n<p>For every 100 calories burned as a result of working out,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0960982221011209#!\">the study says<\/a>\u00a0most people will\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/22\/well\/move\/weight-loss-exercise-calories.html\">net fewer than 72 calories burned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis suggestion has profound implications for both the evolution of metabolism and human health. It implies that a long-term increase in activity does not directly translate into an increase in total energy expenditure (TEE) because other components of TEE may decrease in response \u2013 energy compensation,\u201d the study summary notes.<\/p>\n<p>The group found that for 1,754 adults living \u201cnormal lives,\u201d energy compensation averages 28% due to reduced basal energy expenditure (BEE) and that \u201cthis suggests that only 72% of the extra calories we burn from additional activity translates into extra calories burned that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BEE is how many calories are burned simply by being alive.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" Images\/iStockphoto<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers subtracted numbers from TEE to understand energy expenditure from exercise and other movement and used\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/science\/natural-science\/math\">statistical modeling<\/a>\u00a0to draw these conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the degree of energy compensation\u00a0for different body compositions varied considerably.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The reason, the study suggests, could be due to among-individual differences in calorie compensation, with people who compensate more being more likely to accumulate body fat.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, the researchers said, the process might be within individuals \u2013 bodies compensating more strongly for calories burned during activity and making\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/weight-loss\">weight loss<\/a>\u00a0more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetermining the causality of the relationship between energy compensation and adiposity will be key to improving public health strategies regarding obesity,\u201d the study states.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the study did not examine\u00a0food\u00a0intake.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/obesity\/data\/adult.html\">The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a>\u00a0notes that adult obesity prevalence in the U.S. was 42.4% in 2017 to 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" published this month in iScience<\/a>\u00a0points to increased physical activity and improvements in fitness levels as key to reducing the risk of obesity-related health conditions and mortality \u2013 even with the absence of weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe propose a weight-neutral strategy for obesity treatment on the following grounds: (1) the mortality risk associated with obesity is largely attenuated or eliminated by moderate-to-high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) or physical activity (PA), (2) most cardiometabolic risk markers associated with obesity can be improved with exercise training independent of weight loss and by a magnitude similar to that observed with weight-loss programs, (3) weight loss, even if intentional, is not consistently associated with lower mortality risk, (4) increases in CRF or PA are consistently associated with greater reductions in mortality risk than is intentional weight loss, and (5) weight cycling is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes including increased mortality,\u201d the University of Arizona and University of Virginia authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdherence to PA may improve if health care professionals consider PA and CRF as essential vital signs and consistently emphasize to their patients the myriad benefits of PA and CRF in the absence of weight loss,\u201d they said.\n
