Tagging Bitcoin, Ripple and its payment ecosystem, RippleNet, the former U.S. official wrote: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cXRP\u2019s primary purpose is facilitating cross border payments while other cryptos find their value in speculation. China\u2019s latest move brings this point home.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rios served as the U.S. Treasurer from 2009 to 2016 under President Barack Obama, overseeing all currency and coin production activities with an annual budget of $5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlockchain and crypto will underpin our future global financial systems,\u201d Rios declared on joining Ripple\u2019s board, adding that the firm is \u201cone of best examples of how to use cryptocurrency in a substantive and legitimate role to facilitate payments globally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rios also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/investment-tracker\/2021\/former-u-s-treasurer-rosie-rios-aims-to-break-glass-walls-of-closed-off-vc-world\/\">expressed<\/a> concerns over cryptocurrencies being a tool for criminal actors. \u201cThere\u2019s still a lot of work to be done in terms of really knowing what\u2019s behind the curtain, how blockchain really works, how unfortunately cryptos are used to fund the dark web and other illicit activities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>Ripple is helping Bhutan pilot a CBDC<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Released in 2012, Ripple is a distributed open-source protocol and remittance system created by U.S. company Ripple Labs.
