Levine told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/27\/1040872498\/john-hinckley-unconditional-release?utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=politics&amp;utm_medium=social\" class=\"icon none\">NPR<\/a> that Hinckley has an \u201cexcellent\u201d prognosis and \u201cthere is no evidence of danger whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hinckley, 66, is set to be be granted his unconditional release in June 2022.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       A jury found Hinckley not guilty by reason of insanity in 1982. Hinckley proceeded to stay at St. Elizabeths Hospital, in Washington, D.C., for more than three decades. In 2016, he was released from the hospital and has been living in Williamsburg, Virginia, at his mother\u2019s house, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/27\/politics\/john-hinckley-jr-reagan\/index.html?utm_source=twCNNp&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_term=link&amp;utm_content=2021-09-27T15%3A57%3A04\" class=\"icon none\">CNN<\/a>. His mother died in the summer of 2021. <\/p>\n<p><strong>See also: \u2018The View\u2019 hosts return after false positive COVID-19 tests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The court-imposed restrictions Hinckley is currently living under have required doctors and therapists to oversee his psychiatric medication and therapy. Hinckley has been barred from having a gun. And he can\u2019t contact Reagan\u2019s children, other victims or their families, or actress Jodie Foster, whom he said helped \u201cinspire\u201d his assassination attempt in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/courts-ronald-reagan-jodie-foster-john-hinckley-c97c9e5f09d8f10e1b42290164965a0d\" class=\"icon none\">2020 violence risk assessment<\/a> conducted on behalf of Washington\u2019s Department of Behavioral Health concluded that Hinckley would not pose a danger.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. government opposed ending restrictions as of a May court filing, and retained an expert to determine whether or not Hinckley would pose a danger to himself or others if unconditionally released. Findings from such an examination have not been filed in court.<\/p>\n<p>Hinckley was 25 when he shot and wounded the 40th U.S. president outside a Washington hotel. The shooting paralyzed Reagan press secretary James Brady, who died in 2014.
