As part of the plea deal, Griffith could face up to six-and-a-half years in prison. Formal sentencing is expected to commence in January 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Virgil, who served as senior researcher for the Ethereum Foundation, was arrested in November 2019 after attending a conference in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang earlier in the year. Prosecutors allege that the developer gave a presentation on how to launder money and evade sanctions using blockchain technology. <\/p>\n<p>Griffith\u2019s plea deal came just as jury selection was set to begin in New York. As The Wall Street Journal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/a-crypto-guru-goes-on-trial-for-allegedly-advising-north-korea-11632740401\">reported<\/a>, the trial was likely to touch on complex matters involving questions of free speech and North Korea\u2019s relations with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Journalist Ethan Lou, who claims to have been in North Korea with Griffith when he gave the presentation, said it\u2019s unclear what sparked the developer\u2019s guilty plea. He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ethan_Lou\/status\/1442500945972137990?s=20\">explained<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUnclear what new development caused this guilty plea.
