Sign up to get it delivered straight to your inbox in the morning. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Kovrig<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8221895\/west-block-michael-kovrig-interview\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">gave an interview<\/a> to Global\u2019s <strong>Mercedes Stephenson<\/strong> on Sunday from Toronto, after he and <strong>Michael Spavor<\/strong> were <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-michael-kovrig-michael-spavor-coming-home-after-us-strikes-plea-deal\/\">released from detention<\/a> in China after more than 1,000 days in prison, a joyous event linked to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-58690974\">the release<\/a> of Huawei executive <strong>Meng Wanzhou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt was really moving and knowing that so many people knew about the situation, cared about the situation, really helped us get through a very difficult time,\u201d said Kovrig. \u201c<strong>I just want to say thank you very much<\/strong> to all Canadians for the enormous support and all of the effort that so many people have made to help bring Michael Spavor and me home.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>A hard lesson:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, <strong>Campbell Clark<\/strong> analyzes the situation and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-meng-wanzhou-flies-away-leaving-a-hard-lesson-behind\/\">concludes<\/a> that China was willing to use the detention of the two Michaels to get what it wanted.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This was a deal deal struck by the Biden administration, rather than the U.S. attorney who indicted Ms. Meng, and clearly the quid pro quo was a return for the two Canadian men detained in the wake of her arrest.\u00a0Chinese authorities have denied there was any link between the cases since they scooped up the two Canadian civilians in the weeks after Ms. Meng\u2019s arrest by Canadian authorities in December, 2018. It was hard to believe that then. It is impossible to believe that now. Both suffered the kind of <strong>cruel detention for which they can never really be compensated<\/strong>, and which, by the way, was never visited upon Ms. Meng.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Xi Jinping knows why:<\/strong> In the <em>National Post<\/em>, <strong>Terry Glavin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/terry-glavin-only-chinese-strongman-xi-jinping-knows-why-the-michaels-were-released\">writes<\/a> that Canadians have every reason to be \u201cdisgusted, embarrassed, ashamed and angry.\u201d Glavin writes that it is hard to know if diplomacy had much to do with the release of the Michaels.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What is known is that Meng\u2019s efforts to evade extradition to the U.S. on 13 charges of conspiracy, fraud, wire fraud and other counts related to Huawei\u2019s dealings in Iran had gone mostly nowhere in Judge <strong>Heather Holmes<\/strong>\u2019 B.C. court, and a ruling was imminent. The case was perhaps <strong>weeks away from showing up as a political decision<\/strong> the Trudeau government would have been expected to make.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>China bowed to pressure:<\/strong> Canada\u2019s ambassador to the U.S.,\u00a0<strong>Kirsten Hillman<\/strong>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/chinese-government-initiated-dialogue-to-release-two-michaels-canada-s-ambassador-to-the-u-s-1.5601113\">told CTV<\/a> that <strong>China initiated the dialogue<\/strong> to release the two Michaels. China bowed to pressure as the judicial negotiation of Wanzhou\u2019s case neared resolution. \u201cI think in having felt for over 1,000 days incredible pressure from Canada [and] from our allies around the world that we had mobilized in regards to the situation of the Michaels\u2026 I think the Chinese government decided that, you know, it was time to put this behind them and move on,\u201d Hillman said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hostage swap<\/strong>: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2021\/09\/25\/theyre-home-now-we-find-out-what-went-into-ensuring-the-release-of-michael-kovrig-and-michael-spavor-from-china.html\">Experts tell<\/a> the <em>Star<\/em> that it is noteworthy that China wanted the exchange to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear like a cold-war hostage swap.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I take away from this. From the first, [the Chinese officials] were talking out of both sides of their mouth,\u201d said Clive Ansley, a consultant and former professor of Chinese history and law. \u201cWhat they really want to do is leave the message that you know <strong>what\u2019s going to happen if you mess around with us<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>How they lost: Alex Boutilier<\/strong> and <strong>Stephanie Levitz<\/strong> have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2021\/09\/25\/this-was-the-moment-that-conservative-insiders-knew-erin-otoole-would-lose-the-election.html\">an illuminating article<\/a> in the <em>Star<\/em> on how the Conservatives lost our recent election\u2014some of his own candidates and MPs would have refused to accept a more aggressive vaccination policy, which limited how O\u2019Toole could react to the Liberal wedge.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Complicating the effort is the fact that some Conservative MPs and candidates <strong>flatly refused to tell the party leadership<\/strong> whether or not they\u2019ve been vaccinated. If O\u2019Toole endorsed mandatory vaccinations, he wouldn\u2019t just face outrage from a party base that takes individual choice seriously\u2014he\u2019d also risk having his own candidates offside with the policy, and have to cut them loose or face a constant barrage of questions about why he was still allowing them to run.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Pressure on O\u2019Toole:<\/strong> CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/conservatives-divided-on-fate-of-o-toole-as-party-s-mps-call-for-unity-1.5599886\">reports<\/a> that Erin O\u2019Toole can expect a <strong>leadership challenge<\/strong> after losing the election, but it sounds like he can count on the support of Calgary Nose Hill MP <strong>Michelle Rempel Garner<\/strong>. So far, his critics in caucus have kept their critiques anonymous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time for a\u00a0woman at DND?<\/strong>\u00a0As O\u2019Toole ponders a leadership challenge, Trudeau turns to cabinet making. Experts <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/2021\/09\/26\/canadas-only-female-defence-minister-was-in-1993-is-it-time-for-another.html\">tell the Canadian Press<\/a> it is time for Trudeau to appoint a female defence minister, the first since 1993.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Massive trouble\u2019:<\/strong> Neither O\u2019Toole nor Trudeau have to deal with a problem as bad as that facing Alberta\u2019s government. On Sunday, two prominent doctors sent a letter to the new health minister urging\u00a0a province-wide \u201cfire break\u201d lockdown, the <em>Calgary Herald<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/news\/local-news\/prominent-alberta-doctors-call-for-firebreak-lockdown-mandatory-vaccines-for-employees\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAlberta\u2019s hospital system, especially <strong>ICUs are under more killing stress<\/strong> than at any time in the province\u2019s history. All Albertans have and do depend on our acute care hospitals.
