\n The NYPD is eyeing a controversial \u201cpandemic drone\u201d that caused so much hysteria in one Connecticut community, cops had to cancel the program.<\/p>\n

Residents in Westport successfully grounded Draganfly\u2019s sensor-equipped drone \u2014 which can detect fever, temperature, heart and respiratory rates in humans from as far as 190 feet in the air \u2014 soon after police announced plans to deploy the \u201cFlatten the Curve\u201d device.<\/p>\n

\u201cTowns and the state should be wary of self-interested, privacy-invading companies using COVID-19 as a chance to market their products and create future business opportunities,\u201d the Connecticut ACLU said in response to the proposed program.<\/p>\n

But not all feedback was negative.\u00a0Soon after Westport made its plans public, the NYPD rang.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey did reach out,\u201d said Westport Lt. Anthony Prezioso. \u201cThey spoke to our captain. They were looking for contact information from the person over there [at Draganfly].\u201d<\/p>\n

A company spokesman said the NYPD is in \u201ccursory talks\u201d about the drones.<\/p>\n

The NYPD confirmed its interest in products by the Canadian-based drone maker, but claimed \u201cthere are no plans at this time to purchase this particular product.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NYPD regularly reaches out to various police departments and law enforcement agencies to discuss and exchange information regarding best practices and the use of various forms of technology<\/a>,\u201d Sgt. Jessica McRorie said.<\/p>\n

Similar to the reaction in Westport, the NYPD\u2019s deployment of 14 drones in 2018 sparked ire from the New York Civil Liberties Union, which said it has \u201cserious concerns\u201d about the department\u2019s plans to use the aircraft for a variety of reasons.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
