“#Marina Squerciati on What You May Miss About Burzek’s Family Dynamic<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

After getting shot, Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is home recovering, but gets drawn into a case in the September 29 episode of Chicago P.D.<\/em><\/p>\n

Upon hearing that Burgess might be thinking about taking a desk job \u2014 her ex, Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), began looking into it without talking to her \u2014 Sergeant Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) brings her in to talk to a victim. Burgess ends up going undercover to take down a parole officer assaulting his parolees.<\/p>\n

Squerciati talks to TV Insider about what\u2019s next for Burgess, Burzek\u2019s relationship status, and more.<\/p>\n

When Burgess follows Gary, even as Ruzek tells her not to, is it as much to prove to herself she can do the job as it is to get him?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Marina Squerciati<\/strong>: Every single step she takes, especially in the beginning after the hospital when she goes to that first house by herself, that\u2019s to prove to herself that she can do the job. But I think it\u2019s more that she really wants Sarah to feel safe in a way that she doesn\u2019t feel like she is because Roy still hasn\u2019t been app<\/a>rehended. That\u2019s the main thrust for her. I don\u2019t think she\u2019s proving to herself she can do it. It\u2019s more, \u201cI need this girl to feel safe because I\u2019m not going to get that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Where\u2019s Burgess\u2019 head when it comes to returning to work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When she turns to Ruzek after shooting Gary and he says, \u201cAre you OK?\u201d And she says, \u201cYeah, I\u2019m OK,\u201d I think she means that in a deeper way. \u201cNot everything is healed. I am going to be OK. I see light at the end of the tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n

How will her recovery continue to play out onscreen?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What is wonderful about the show is that everybody gets a chance to shine. After this, we go into a little bit more of Halstead [Jesse Lee Soffer] and Upton\u2019s [Tracy Spiridakos] story, which has really been so cool that they\u2019re engaged now. Then after that, we really go into LaRoyce [Hawkins\u2019 Atwater]. He starts to take more of a hand in rebuilding some of the dilapidated places in Chicago and being more invested in the Black community, so that\u2019s a really cool thing. The reverberations of Burgess\u2019 PTSD haven\u2019t come up yet, but I think they will in regards to Hailey and her guilt about killing Roy and me not knowing. But that\u2019s me guessing because the writers aren\u2019t exactly calling me to tell me what\u2019s happening.<\/p>\n

What are we seeing from Burgess and Upton\u2019s relationship this season, considering that secret that\u2019s weighing on Upton?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That secret takes a backseat for a couple of episodes. I\u2019m guessing around 908 or 909, we\u2019re going to see that. I hope [there\u2019s] some sort of interaction between her and Burgess because unfortunately, she\u2019s the key to Burgess having that thing that Burgess is able to give Sarah, that peace, \u201cyou\u2019re safe now.\u201d Burgess doesn\u2019t feel like she\u2019s safe and that\u2019s really hard as a person and also as a mother.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s talk about the always complicated Burgess-Ruzek relationship. We see he\u2019s helping out with Makayla, he\u2019s trying to help Burgess even if he\u2019s not going about it in the best way, like with looking into that desk job. What will we see from them in coming episodes? <\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s so funny. There\u2019s a joke on set because I don\u2019t know if you can tell, but there\u2019s a bed made up on my couch, which you can sometimes see and sometimes not, but Ruzek is sleeping on my couch, which is not necessarily in the dialogue. It\u2019s this really amazing, weird, complicated relationship that I love because they\u2019re so screwed up, but they\u2019re not going to break up, they\u2019re together, you know what I mean? They\u2019re just in it. They\u2019re the weirdest family dynamic and it\u2019s awesome. And it\u2019s complicated just like real life. I love that we\u2019re showing that on the TV show.<\/p>\n

So their relationship status would be\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

They\u2019re definitely not in a relationship \u2014 he\u2019s sleeping on the couch \u2014 but they\u2019re a family, which is weird \u2026 It\u2019s like when Gwyneth Paltrow<\/a> released that statement that her and Chris Martin<\/a> were consciously uncoupling. I feel like we should release a statement to the fans being like, \u201cWe are consciously uncoupling, but we\u2019re kind of a couple that were uncoupled, but we don\u2019t know.\u201d \u2026 I think they\u2019re just sort of living in the weirdness of it in the fact that they\u2019re both committed to Makayla. They haven\u2019t figured their own thing out.<\/p>\n

What about Burgess and Voight moving forward? He, too, is keeping a secret from her and he was the one to push her to work this case with them to see if she\u2019d feel like she can do the job again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I feel like Voight\u2019s very tender towards Burgess, very fatherly. I think he pushed her because he knows that she can do it and ultimately diving back in is the best medicine. But he\u2019s smart. I don\u2019t think he\u2019ll let that Roy secret out. He\u2019s a survivor, so I think it\u2019s up to Upton.<\/p>\n

What else is coming up for Burgess? <\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s going to be a test with Makayla and the adoption in the future. I don\u2019t really know that much about it, but I can tease that. There may be some complications with the adoption.<\/p>\n

Are we going to see any Burgess-Platt scenes coming up? Because Ruzek went to Platt about Burgess, but we didn\u2019t see them together in this episode.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Listen, Amy Morton is the shining star of this whole series<\/a>. I think everybody wants some scenes with Platt. So I hope that everyone gets them because she just makes every scene better.<\/p>\n

What are you hoping to explore with Burgess\u2019 PTSD?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve sort of been living in it so much. I haven\u2019t been thinking ahead about it. But we\u2019ve seen her hesitate a couple of times, so I don\u2019t think it\u2019s that. I think it\u2019s really about what you can bring home when you\u2019re a mom and what you leave at the door and how you manage to balance that.<\/p>\n
