\n The Yankees entered 2020 with championship aspirations and those haven\u2019t changed despite the delayed start to the season and the vast changes the game<\/a> is experiencing this year.<\/p>\n

But the new expanded playoff system, which was only put into place hours before the Yankees and Nationals opened the season in Washington on Thursday, is an unpopular one within the Yankees\u2019 clubhouse.<\/p>\n

With 16 teams \u2014 up from 10 \u2014 set to make the postseason this year, the only incentive for winning the division is hosting all the games of the best-of-three first-round series<\/a>, since the one-game wild card is out, at least for this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI definitely think it\u2019s good for the game to create more high-leverage games, if that\u2019s what you want to call it, more excitement,\u2019\u2019 Zack Britton said before the Yankees\u2019 9-2 loss to the Nationals on Saturday. \u201cBut I wasn\u2019t a big fan of division winners not being rewarded in some form or fashion. So I wasn\u2019t really for this, but I do see the benefit of increasing playoffs and adding that to our sport.\u201d<\/p>\n

In years past, if the Yankees won the AL East, they would advance directly to the ALDS and face either the winner of the wild-card game or the division winner with the worst record. This season, they\u2019ll have to deal with a series immedia<\/a>tely just to get to the ALDS.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s good for the future,\u2019\u2019 Britton said. \u201cI just felt like it was kind of rushed. But the only thing I would\u2019ve liked to see is division winners \u2014 whether that\u2019s us or another team \u2014 get a bye or something to show you won your division.\u201d <\/p>\n

Chad Green said he\u2019s \u201cnot really sure [and] a little hesitant,\u2019\u2019 about the changes.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo have over half the league make the playoffs, I would like to see a reward for winning the division,\u2019\u2019 the right-hander said. \u201cI\u2019d probably need to learn more about the actual specifics of it, [but there] needs to be more incentive for winning the division.\u201d<\/p>\n

And though Aaron Boone is OK with the format this year, the manager hopes it\u2019s not extended.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really don\u2019t see it,\u2019\u2019 Boone said of a 16-team playoff in a normal year. \u201cI see maybe something in-between last year and this year. But I don\u2019t see 16 teams in a 162[-game] scenario. I think this year, all bets are off.\u201d <\/p>\n

Green also wasn\u2019t thrilled with the new rule where teams start extra innings with a runner on second base, joining fellow reliever Adam Ottavino, who said last week, \u201cIt\u2019s just not real baseball.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be different,\u2019\u2019 Green said. \u201cA lot of guys are gonna have to adjust to it. You\u2019ve got to have your stuff as soon as you get in there. If you start the 10th inning, the game could be over real quick.\u201d<\/p>\n

And he expects pitchers to change their app<\/a>roach.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s gonna be more of a mental thing than anything,\u2019\u2019 Green said. \u201cGuys are just gonna be coming in and trying to attack guys right away and see what happens. \u2026 I\u2019m personally not a huge fan of it. When you\u2019re playing a 60-game season and every game matters, just to throw a guy on second base is not the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was on display Friday night for the first time in Oakland in the A\u2019s win over the Angels. Oakland\u2019s Marcus Semien started the bottom of the 10th on second and scored on Matt Olson\u2019s grand slam.<\/p>\n

Green didn\u2019t watch the game, but was aware of the result Saturday. <\/p>\n
