Margrethe Vestager \u2014 who monitors fair market competition throughout Europe for the European Commission, the EU\u2019s governing body \u2014 had claimed that Alphabet\u2019s Google had used its global brand recognition to make sure Android users were \u201clocked down in a Google-controlled ecosystem.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The commission claimed the company had paid off tech manufacturers and operators to exclude other search engines, such as Bing, from their devices, saying they\u2019d \u201cobstructed the development of competing mobile operating systems which could have provided a platform for rival search engines to gain traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Lamadrid disagreed with Vestager\u2019s premise: \u201cPeople use Google because they choose to, not because they are forced to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle\u2019s market share in general search is consistent with consumer surveys showing that 95% of users prefer Google to rival search engines,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>These rival tech giants have engaged in tit-for-tat business practices for years, as both the EU and US have tried to fairly regulate their massive market reach. Amid Google\u2019s current fight with the European Commission, they\u2019ve attempted to throw Apple under the bus. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission shut its eyes to the real competitive dynamic in this industry, that between Apple and Android,\u201d Google\u2019s lawyer Meredith Pickford said of the $5 billion fine levied against them.
