Sign up to get it delivered straight to your inbox in the morning.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday marked the first\u00a0<b>National Day for Truth and Reconciliation <\/b>commemorated in conjunction with the <b>Orange Shirt Day <\/b>that has been marked for several years, and\u00a0<b>Drew Hayden Taylor<\/b>\u00a0wrote an evocative and unsparing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvo.org\/article\/for-the-real-meaning-of-the-national-day-for-truth-and-reconciliation-look-deeper-six-feet-deeper\">essay<\/a> for TVO about how the true meaning and necessity of the day is located \u201csix feet deeper\u201d than the unfathomable loss and erasure we see on the surface:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Like most, if not all, nations in this world, we believe <b>we have a responsibility to our children.<\/b> Part of that duty is to remember them, especially when the rest of the\u00a0world has pretty much gone out of its way to eliminate that memory. Other than their deaths,<b> this is probably the worst crime: trying to tell us they didn\u2019t exist.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau<\/b>, meanwhile, landed in hot water for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8234246\/trudeau-vacation-indigenous-tofino-truth-and-reconciliation\/\">heading<\/a> off to <b>Tofino, B.C.<\/b> for a few days\u2019 vacation with his family, rather than being in Ottawa in \u201cprivate meetings,\u201d as his official itinerary indicated. His office<b> defended the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a><\/b> by pointing out which activities related to the day he had taken part in. \u201cFollowing his participation in last night\u2019s ceremony marking the first National Day for Truth &amp; Reconciliation, he is <b>speaking today with residential school survivors from across the country<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will they or won\u2019t they?\u00a0<\/strong>The question hovering over the <b>Conservatives\u2019<\/b> potential desire to <b>defenestrate Leader Erin O\u2019Toole <\/b>following\u00a0the federal election (and before another that is likely not too far off) is one of the big political stories at the moment. But on Thursday, the party\u2019s president <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/conservative-party-bert-chen-erin-otoole-rob-batherson-1.6194295\">said <\/a>that one member of the national council who started a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/recall-erin-o-toole-as-leader-of-the-conservative-party?recruiter=30172496&amp;utm_source=share_petition&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=psf_combo_share_initial&amp;utm_term=psf_combo_share_initial&amp;recruited_by_id=c31814a0-edd4-012f-b30c-404046835f95\">petition<\/a>\u2014within hours of the election results being clear\u2014to recall the leader<b> risks being booted<\/b> for not advancing the best interests of the party. <b>Bert Chen<\/b>, an Ontario representative, has said he speaks on behalf of the many members who feel \u201cbetrayed\u201d by O\u2019Toole<b> shifting the party to the centre<\/b> after running as a <b>\u201ctrue blue Conservative\u201d<\/b> for the leadership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConservatives believe in integrity and we believe in accountability, so integrity means keeping true to your beliefs and what you\u2019ve communicated that you will run on, and not changing them halfway through an election or on a dime,\u201d he told CBC\u2019s <em>Power &amp; Politics<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But <b>Rob Batherson<\/b>, president of the Conservative Party of Canada, says he\u2019s received many complaints about the nature of Chen\u2019s attempted knifing of the leader, and the national council will <b>decide his fate in mid-October.\u00a0<\/b>\u201cSo a lot of our party members in particular, a lot of party members in Ontario have reached out to me, have reached out to national council, expressing concern that Mr. Chen has abused his position on national council,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dis-cons<\/strong>: In other discontented-conservative news,<b> Alberta Premier Jason Kenney<\/b> will <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/alberta\/article-jason-kenney-to-face-leadership-review-in-april\/\">face<\/a> a <b>leadership review<\/b> at the <b>United Conservative Party annual <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> meeting in April<\/b>\u2014earlier than the review that was originally planned for a year from now, but not soon enough for those who have lost confidence in him.<\/p>\n<p>And Kenney is facing <b>discontent from both sides<\/b>, with some critics horrified by his determinedly hands-off <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach as his province caught fire with the virus, while others are enraged by his eventual embrace of a vaccine mandate and reinstated public health measures. The <em>Globe<\/em> reported:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A message to members from party president Ryan Becker said that, while annual general meetings have traditionally been held in the fall, <b>\u2018given grassroots feedback\u2019 <\/b>the UCP\u2019s provincial board has decided on an earlier review.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Broken heartland<\/strong>: Still in Alberta, CBC has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/conservative-vote-alberta-election-1.6194190\">analysis<\/a> of <b>where and why the CPC lost substantial ground <\/b>in that province in the federal election, tumbling from a dominant 69 per cent of the vote in 2019 to 55 per cent on Sept. 20, and <b>losing three seats<\/b> in the process. Certainly the<b> unpopularity of Kenney<\/b> is a factor as Alberta buckles under out-of-control COVID spread, but so is the difficult balancing act O\u2019Toole attempted between keeping his base from rebelling while trying to appeal to more centrist voters. Ultimately, his party shed votes <b>all over the place<\/b>, to other parties and to the apathy of non-voters, CBC reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Conservatives <b>bled support to both sides of the political spectrum<\/b>. The Liberals, NDP, PPC and Mavericks sucked up 263,000 more collective Alberta votes than in the previous election, while <b>voter turnout fell nearly five percentage points<\/b>, from 69.2 per cent to 64.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Moe problems<\/strong>: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with <b>Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe<\/b> about the province\u2019s need for federal assistance as <b>COVID cases and hospitalizations balloon<\/b>, though <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/news\/saskatchewan\/moe-talks-covid-19-with-trudeau-raises-request-for-medical-staff\/wcm\/2e2f8828-a6ae-4694-b333-30aea67fd0a8\">news<\/a> of the meeting didn\u2019t hit the wires until Thursday. In an interview with the Regina<em> Leader-Post<\/em>, <b>Moe seemed at pains to indicate that the situation was under control\u00a0<\/b>and his province\u2019s needs were specific and limited, though the opposition NDP has been leaning on his government for more than a week to seek additional help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did have a discussion around medical staff and critical care nurses, respirologists,\u201d said Moe. \u201cWe don\u2019t need a large number of people of multiple disciplines; we need a <b>very small number of people in specific disciplines<\/b>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, the <b>Prime Minister\u2019s Office<\/b> also sent out its own <b>readout<\/b> summarizing the call: \u201cThe Prime Minister reiterated that the Government of Canada remains <b>ready to respond to any requests from the Government of Saskatchewan<\/b> and encouraged the Premier to submit specific needs as they emerge. He committed to working with the province to provide additional supports to keep people safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, <b>Moe <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/news\/saskatchewan\/sask-party-mla-resigns-from-caucus-for-misrepresenting-her-vaccination-status\/wcm\/28df5223-9df1-46c3-a4c1-eeabd7af8f32\">booted<\/a> one of his MLAs<\/b> from the Saskatchewan Party caucus for <b>\u201cmisrepresenting\u201d her vaccination status<\/b>. <b>Nadine Wilson <\/b>was first elected to represent the district of Saskatchewan Rivers in 2007 and recently served as <b>deputy speaker in the Legislative Assembly<\/b>. Moe said caucus members had been asked in the spring to report whether they were vaccinated or had made arrangements to be, and that seems to be where Wilson\u2019s dishonesty came in, though she refused to\u00a0discuss her vaccination status when the Saskatoon <em>StarPhoenix<\/em> came calling, instead saying that <b>she had resigned from caucus<\/b> because, \u201c<b>I can no longer support the direction of the Saskatchewan Party government<\/b> or follow the government with true conviction regarding the current health situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story contains this incredible tidbit in its closing paragraph:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Wilson was not shy about advertising her purported vaccination status prior to that review.
