From the right: Dems\u2019 Push for Unemployment<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSomething in the labor market fundamentally changed during the pandemic. Fewer people seem willing to work,\u201d Andy Puzder notes at Real Clear Politics.<\/a> \u201cThe Biden administration has increased food stamp benefits by 25% and Democrats now want to make the current $3,600 per year tax credit\u201d for children under 6 permanent. That credit \u201cis a good example of the growing government support mentality businesses are up against.\u201d \u201cPeople struggling financially\u201d will never find fulfilling jobs \u201cif the government seduces them into living off what other people produce rather than realizing their potential.\u201d And \u201cthe Democrats are attempting to cobble together the social<\/a>ists\u2019 dream program \u2014 universal basic income with cradle-to-grave government dependence.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the left: Objectivity Still Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n

An \u201calarming\u201d Urban Institute blog post warns \u201cthat the research practices of \u2018objectivity\u2019 and \u2018rigor\u2019 are \u2018harmful\u2019 and \u2018rooted in racism, ableism, and classism,\u201d Zaid Jilani writes at Persuasion.<\/a> After \u201ca firestorm on social media,\u201d the group\u2019s president emphasized that \u201crigor is a hallmark of what we do.\u201d Jilani finds all this \u201cemblematic of the struggle between truth and social justice that is taking place across many left-leaning institutions.\u201d Indeed, \u201cthe point of research is not to promote a particular ideology or agenda\u201d but to \u201ctell us what is true.\u201d Nor are \u201cold-fashioned objectivity and truth-seeking . . . the lone purview of European-Americans, who have imposed them on all institutions.\u201d Indeed, \u201cobjectivity and rigor, far from promoting racism, have often provided the data that serve as the antidote to racism.\u201d And: \u201cIf institutions continue to undermine their own credibility, people may start going to less reliable sources for information instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Capitol view: Pelosi\u2019s Legacy of Disaster<\/strong><\/p>\n

For all the media love and her \u201creputation as a master legislator,\u201d observes Joe Concha at the Hill, <\/a>Nancy Pelosi\u2019s repeated failure to live up to her promises of a floor vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill leaves the party deeply divided and unable to pass that or the progressive social-spending bill. \u201cBig picture: Democrats just guaranteed that they\u2019ll lose the House and Senate in 2022, which would likely guarantee the end of the 81-year-old Pelosi\u2019s political career.\u201d And \u201cThe old saying is that we\u2019re only remembered for what we do last. In Nancy Pelosi\u2019s case, it may well be her inability to bring the party together on infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Education beat: Experts vs. Parents<\/strong><\/p>\n

Virginia gov candidate Terry McAuliffe\u2019s declaration, \u201cI don\u2019t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach,\u201d was \u201ca wonder to behold,\u201d snarks Peter Wood at Spectator World,<\/a> as many Americans think government has stolen \u201ctheir right to have some say in the education of their children,\u201d and two Virginia school districts \u201care frontline battlegrounds in the fight over curricula.\u201d McAuliffe stood with \u201cenlightened experts who can be trusted to keep children safe from the endarkening views of their parents.\u201d But \u201cthe charisma of the expert is clouded these days by doubts.\u201d Take COVID lockdowns, for example. \u201cExperts don\u2019t know when to stop.\u201d Tasked with \u201cmaintaining clean waterways, they\u2019ll exert authority over every puddle and seek to license beavers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media watch: News<\/a> Has Become Religion<\/strong><\/p>\n

After a week where media and politicians obsessed about Border Patrol agents whipping\u00a0migrants, with almost no discussion of what happ<\/a>ened to those Haitians later, followed by vast silence on a Politico reporter\u2019s re-confirmation of The Post\u2019s Hunter Biden scoops, Matt Taibbi thunders at TK News:<\/a> \u201cNews in America used to be fun to talk about, fun to joke about, interesting to think about. Now it\u2019s an interminable bummer, because the press business has taken on characteristics of that other institution where talking, joking, and thinking aren\u2019t allowed: church.\u201d And both \u201cdenominations\u201d are fact-averse, \u201cas is shown in polls about, say, pandemic attitudes, where Americans across the board consistently show they know less than they think.\u201d <\/p>\n
