\n San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich on Saturday issued an emotional statement about the death of George Floyd, saying the \u201ccountry is in trouble\u201d and that he is \u201cembarrassed as a white person\u201d to know that a black man can be still be \u201clynched\u201d.<\/p>\n

Floyd\u2019s death in Minneapolis last month after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, placed a knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes, triggered outrage, protests and civil unrest across the United States. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a strange, counter-intuitive sort of way, the best teaching moment of this most recent tragedy \u2026 was the look on the officer\u2019s face,\u201d Popovich said in a stirring video posted by Spurs on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor white people to see how nonchalant, how casual, how just everyday-going-about-his job, so much so that he could just put his left hand in his pocket, wriggle his knee around a little bit to teach this person some sort of a lesson \u2026 and that it was his right and his duty to do it, in his mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m just embarrassed as a white person to know that that can happ<\/a>en. To actually watch a lynching.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I\u2019d see that with my own eyes, in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Popovich, 71, called on white people to raise their voices, speak truth to power \u201cno matter what the consequences\u201d and not let things lie.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlack people have been shouldering this burden for 400 years,\u201d he said. \u201cThe only reason this nation has made the progress it has is because of the persistence, patience and effort of black people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s it going to take? Two more black people with knees in their necks? I don\u2019t think so, I don\u2019t think that\u2019s going to happen.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur country is in trouble. And the basic reason is race.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
