Hit shows such as <em>Desperate Housewives<\/em>, <em>CSI: Crime Scene Investigation<\/em>, and <em>Grey\u2019s Anatomy<\/em> aired shortened seasons as the broadcast networks scrambled to fill in their schedule gaps with reality <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> shows, and imports.<\/p>\n<p>Now history may be repeating, as the IATSE labor union is voting on whether to authorize a strike, with results expected today, Monday, October 4. If that strike is authorized, and if IATSE can\u2019t cut a deal with producers, Hollywood could face another devastating strike that would impact many (but not all) TV shows. Here are the details.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"IATSE_represents_150000_workers_across_arts_media_and_entertainment\"><\/span>IATSE represents 150,000 workers across arts, media, and entertainment.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IATSE begins voting on strike authorization\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/yvWWv9TyDtw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada\u2014IATSE, for short\u2014was founded in 1893, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iatse.net\/about\/\">its website<\/a>. It currently comprises 366 local unions across 13 geographic districts. In Hollywood alone, there are 15 local unions in movie and TV production, with Local 80 covering grips, Local 700 covering editors, Local 800 covering art directors, and Local 892 covering costume designers.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_organization_wants_to_address_%E2%80%9Cthe_most_grievous_problems%E2%80%9D_for_crew_members\"><\/span>The organization wants to address \u201cthe most grievous problems\u201d for crew members.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>For months now, IATSE has been negotiating with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on successor contracts to the now-expired Producer-IATSE Basic Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>And in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iatse.net\/amptp-film-and-television-negotiations-stalled-union-to-hold-nationwide-strike-authorization-vote\/\">a statement<\/a> on September 21, IATSE claimed AMPTP has \u201cfailed\u201d to work with them to address \u201cthe most grievous problems in their workplaces.\u201d Those problems include unsafe working hours, unsustainable wages (especially on streaming projects), and unreasonably short breaks and rest periods, according to the organization.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IATSE asking members for a strike authorization vote\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GeXjFCXq21g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn short, it is incomprehensible that the AMPTP, an ensemble that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> mega-corporations collectively worth trillions of dollars, claims it cannot provide behind-the-scenes crews with reasonable rest, safe hours, living wages, and sustainable benefits,\u201d IATSE <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/iatse.net\/strike-auth-faq\/\">writes on its website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IATSE Local 871 president Marisa Shipley, an art department coordinator who has worked on <em>Grace and Frankie<\/em> and <em>Atypical<\/em>, expressed a similar sentiment to <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/movies\/iatse-strike-authorization-vote-explained\/\">Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/em>. \u201cIt certainly has not felt like the employers see us as humans, and recognize or acknowledge the real human toll that the current working conditions in the industry take,\u201d she said. \u201cI do hope that so many crew members speaking out makes a difference, and they hear us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AMPTP, of course, has a different view of the negotiations: \u201cThe AMPTP put forth a deal-closing comprehensive proposal that meaningfully addresses the IATSE\u2019s key bargaining issues.\u2026 In choosing to leave the bargaining table to seek a strike authorization vote, the IATSE leadership walked away from a generous comprehensive package.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crew_members_have_been_sharing_their_horror_stories_online\"><\/span>Crew members have been sharing their horror stories online.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I know you all are sick of me posting about this strike but I need all of you to understand the torture that is our industry standards. She was back the next day,\u201d one person <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUiMIEgPaVb\/\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cI couldn\u2019t stop looking in her direction the entire shoot. Her stone face, her quiet steady work ethic. I knew she was screaming inside. I hope you all scream for her. Strike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUfzVmwvo5Q\/\">Another account<\/a>: \u201cI\u2019m on a TV show and have been prepping all weekend and am very stressed.\u2026 My chest and stomach tightened up and sort of caved in so that I couldn\u2019t breathe right. First ones in, last ones out. They deserve safe conditions and attainable health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CUOOQdWvBCm\/\">an Instagram post<\/a> a day later, Katherine Heigl said that she will \u201calways continue to support and stand by\u201d her crew-member friends, referencing her fallout with <em>Grey\u2019s<\/em> producers over the long workdays. \u201cSome of you may remember over ten years ago I was very vocal about the absurdity of the working hours crews and actors were being forced into by production.\u2026 I very publicly and for many, many years after got my ass kicked for speaking up,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI speak up today and say with zero hesitation or regret. 14-, 16-, 17-, 18-hour workdays are <em>not<\/em> safe. They are <em>not<\/em> healthy. They cannot and should <em>no<\/em> longer be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_strike_authorization_vote_is_expected_to_pass_but_the_IATSE_leadership_says_their_goal_is_a_deal_not_a_strike\"><\/span>The strike authorization vote is expected to pass, but the IATSE leadership says their goal is a deal, not a strike.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Per <em>EW<\/em>, the vote is expected to pass overwhelmingly, but even then a strike isn\u2019t necessarily in the cards. If the vote passes, the IATSE leadership could call for a strike, but for now, they\u2019re still hoping to work out their issues with the AMPTP at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is not to strike. Our goal is a fair deal,\u201d IATSE president Matthew D. Loeb <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthewloeb\/status\/1443615371827810305\">tweeted<\/a> on Thursday, September 30. \u201c@IATSE members deserve to have reasonable rest, sustainable benefits, living wages, and meal breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_strike_would_shut_down_most_of_Hollywood_but_not_all_of_Hollywood\"><\/span>A strike would shut down most of Hollywood, but not <em>all<\/em> of Hollywood.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>According to <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/iatse-strike-impact-television-movies-industry-2021-10\">Business Insider<\/a><\/em>, an IATSE strike would disrupt productions across North America, starting with talk shows and daytime soap operas, which have a tight turnaround, and then affecting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ed TV productions and film projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[A strike] could affect the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public in that they may not have as much content to view in the future,\u201d entertainment labor lawyer Alan Brunswick explained to the site. \u201cIt could slow down production of motion pictures and television shows, and that includes shows that will be on digital services like Amazon or Netflix.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2021\/09\/iatse-strike-hbo-bet-showtime-starz-contracts-amptp-netflix-union-1234843466\/\">Deadline<\/a><\/em> reports, however, some premium cable networks have separate contracts with the IATSE that won\u2019t expire until the end of 2022. \u201cIf you are working on commercials or for HBO, Showtime, Starz, Cinemax, BET or another company that has a contract still in effect\u2014you must keep working,\u201d IATSE told its members, according to the site. \u201cYou will not be a scab!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other agreements still in effect cover music video productions, low-budget theatrical productions, and AICP commercials, <em>Deadline<\/em> adds.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script async defer src=\"https:\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
