Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and its virtual reality headset Oculus, all suffered a major power outage on Monday, switching the platforms offline for a total of six hours to the effect of billions of users and businesses across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The incident was first reported at approximately 3:16 pm UTC on Monday when a surge of complaints emerged from users worldwide claiming that they were unable to access their favorite social networking platforms.<\/p>\n<p>A Cloudflare post-analysis of the crisis\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.cloudflare.com\/october-2021-facebook-outage\/\">concluded<\/a> that Facebook \u201chad stopped announcing the routes to their DNS prefixes,\u201d which meant that the platforms \u201cDNS servers were unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though a small number of individual claims circulated a suspected hack or manipulation after the recent whistleblower story, evidence to conclude these theories was not officially reported.<\/p>\n<p>In an official blog <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/engineering.fb.com\/2021\/10\/04\/networking-traffic\/outage\/\">post<\/a> released Tuesday, Facebook detailed its suspicions for the cause of the outage:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOur engineering teams have learned that configuration changes on the backbone routers that coordinate network traffic between our data centers caused issues that interrupted this communication.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the wake of the March 2019 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Facebook\/status\/1106229690069442560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1106229690069442560%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcointelegraph.com%2Fnews%2Fbitcoin-moves-past-48k-as-facebook-instagram-and-whatsapp-go-down\">outage<\/a>, which lasted for 24 hours, Facebook equally cited an issue with a \u201cserver configuration change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In yeday\u2019s statement, the social media giant continued on to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe want to make clear at this time we believe the root cause of this outage was a faulty configuration change. We also have no evidence that user data was compromised as a result of this downtime.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dorseys_decentralization_dream\"><\/span>Dorsey\u2019s decentralization dream<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>As Facebook\u2019s behemoth stumbled in the public plaza, the crypto communities\u2019 roar for open, decentralized social networks echoed around the neighboring town of Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>A decentralized standard for social media is an initiative that Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is passionate about pursuing as stated in a 2019 tweet, and once again earlier this year.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are trying to do our part by funding an initiative around an open decentralized standard for social media. Our goal is to be a client of that standard for the public conversation layer of the internet.
