Sign up to get it delivered straight to your inbox in the morning. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>O\u2019Toole faces his MPs:<\/strong> Conservative MPs will gather today for their first caucus meeting since the recent election, which ought to give everyone a better sense of\u00a0<strong>Erin O\u2019Toole\u2019s<\/strong> im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te future. One big item on their agenda \u2014 and what a pity it will h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en behind closed doors \u2014 is the vote over the\u00a0Reform Act, which the caucus could use, theoretically, to defenestrate their leader. CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/conservative-caucus-to-vote-on-whether-to-enact-power-to-remove-o-toole-1.5610772\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whining and dining:<\/strong> The <em>Star<\/em>\u2018s <strong>Stephanie Levitz<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2021\/10\/04\/are-conservative-knives-out-for-erin-otoole-insiders-say-his-first-test-is-on-tuesday.html\">surveys opinion<\/a> in the caucus and finds no incipient revolt, but some grumbling.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">Meanwhile, as caucus gets briefed Tuesday, O\u2019Toole\u2019s campaign team will be doing a post-election briefing for members of the Albany Club, where the perceived <strong>power brokers<\/strong> of the Conservative movement <strong>like to wine, whine and dine<\/strong>. A fear that the party is becoming more beholden to the members of that club than its own grassroots is an issue that\u2019s rankled for months, and some say reflects the fact O\u2019Toole never spent much time on the party\u2019s backbench.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>So sorry:<\/strong>\u00a0There is a some interesting commentary on the prime minister\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gray_Mackenzie\/status\/1445121942156189697\">whereabouts<\/a> on the weekend, beginning with a funny column from <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0own <strong>Marie Danielle Smith<\/strong> imagining Trudeau\u2019s ultimate apology.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I\u2019m sorry I created a federal holiday for reconciliation then went and spent part of it vacationing. I\u2019m sorry I didn\u2019t go to Kelowna instead. I\u2019m sorry my itinerary said I would be in \u201cprivate meetings\u201d in Ottawa and didn\u2019t mention my flight to Tofino. I\u2019m especially sorry this sojourn attracted national attention. Because\u2014cough-fishwrap-cough\u2014we should all have been focusing on reconciliation. So what I\u2019m sorry about, most of all, is that you seized on my <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a> rather than spending the day in quiet reflection. The thing is, I keep saying \u201csorry\u201d over and over and over. But <strong>what makes me feel the sorriest is how my apologies never seem to satisfy you<\/strong>. Even when I use all the right words.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Non-negotiable:<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>Colby Cosh<\/strong> has an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/colby-cosh-what-trudeau-should-have-said-about-his-ill-timed-family-vacation-in-tofino\">interesting rumination<\/a> on how we think about politicians and elections. He, too, imagines what Trudeau might say to voters, if he were to be honest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI was in an awkward position because I promised my unfortunate wife and my blameless children that we would have a getaway as soon as the very rigorous and exhausting election campaign was over. We didn\u2019t see the problem with the timing soon enough, and, as you can imagine, I have long since depleted the store of excuses that even a prime minister can offer to his family. This one was non-negotiable, and <strong>I\u2019m confident that every husband will understand my situation<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Jaw-dropping vacuum:<\/strong> At CTV, <strong>Don Martin<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/don-martin-on-a-national-day-of-indigenous-reflection-the-prime-minister-sees-only-his-own-1.5610308\">writes that<\/a> the prime minister\u2019s absence from reconciliation ceremonies suggests not all is well in his operation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Such a jaw-dropping vacuum of common political sense at the top of this government\u2019s sprawling-staff pyramid can only be caused by one of three things. Either his advisers have all come down with a third-term case of scheduling blindness and communications incompetence. Or the prime minister was warned about the brutal optics of flying directly over residential school burial sites to reach some prime surfing beaches \u2013 and opted to ignore them anyway. Or his staff are too scared to red flag even the most jarring oversight on a super-sensitive file that already requires every word in every statement to be vetted by a dozen bureaucrats.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>What happened?<\/strong> In <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em>, <strong>Justin Ling<\/strong> has a revealing piece looking at an election study based on focus groups, which show that the Liberals\u2019 election promises struck voters as insufficiently concrete, which suggests they were in trouble in the campaign.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the most insightful takeaways from the consultants\u2019 study was around <strong>affordability<\/strong>\u2014particularly a hot, increasingly inaccessible, housing market and spiking gas prices. \u201cThe major party platforms nibbled around the edges of the basket, but with <strong>no leader successfully addressing this issue head-on<\/strong>, the electorate chose to reward none of them,\u201d they warned. Affordability and inequality have crashed together in a particularly poignant way during the pandemic. As one small-business-owner voter explained: \u201cWe\u2019re the hardest hit. And when you look at how ridiculous a lot of the restrictions were, like your basic mom and pop shops closed down and Walmart, or Costco or stayed open.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Close to majority:<\/strong> In the <em>Hill Times<\/em>, <strong>Abbas Ranna<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hilltimes.com\/2021\/10\/04\/they-lost-the-air-war-trudeau-liberals-missed-their-majority-government-by-only-16870-votes-in-11-ridings-hill-times-analysis\/320623\">crunches the numbers<\/a> and looks at how the Liberals could have won a majority:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s Liberals could have won a majority government in the Sept. 20 election if they had received <strong>16,870 more votes spread across 11 ridings<\/strong>, according to an analysis by\u00a0<em>The Hill Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>In-between person:<\/strong>\u00a0In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Jacques Gallant<\/strong> has an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/federal\/2021\/10\/04\/meet-canadas-first-openly-two-spirit-member-of-parliament.html\">interesting profile<\/a> of\u00a0the first\u00a0first openly Two-Spirit member of Parliament, the new NDP MP for\u00a0for Edmonton Griesbach.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"text-block-container\">There\u2019s a word in Cree \u2014\u00a0<em>tastawiyiniwak<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 that <strong>Blake Desjarlais<\/strong> says best describes him. It means \u201cthe in-between people.\u201d \u201cI love that word because it helps to demonstrate how I operate and see myself,\u201d said Desjarlais, 27. \u201cI see myself between this terrible binary that\u2019s been created \u2014 the Western world imposed this male\/female binary, \u2018this way or that way\u2019 kind of mentality.\u201d\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Back on the job:<\/strong> Global has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8242207\/military-misconduct-sex-offender-review-dawe\/\">a disturbing story<\/a> from <strong>Mercedes Stephenson<\/strong> and <strong>Rachel Gilmore<\/strong> revealing that a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> who wrote a <strong>reference letter for a sex offender<\/strong> has been tasked with working on a number of reviews related to\u00a0sexual misconduct\u00a0within the\u00a0Canadian Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pallister out:<\/strong> <strong>Brian Pallister<\/strong> has resigned from the legislature five weeks after stepping down as premier, CP\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/10\/04\/former-manitoba-premier-resigns-legislature-seat-byelection-to-be-held\/#.YVt2xxq4u6w.twitter\">reports<\/a>. Manitoba Tories choose a new leader Oct. 30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No fines:<\/strong> It seems international travellers who wanted to avoid quarantining needed only to fly to Calgary, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/hotel-quarantine-fine-calgary-1.6196752\">reports<\/a>, presumably since the government was so badly organized it couldn\u2019t hand out fines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feds could mandate vaccination:<\/strong> Federal officials were told in the spring that the government <strong>could make it mandatory<\/strong> for all workers to receive the vaccine, CP\u2019s <strong>Jordan Press<\/strong>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2021\/10\/04\/federal-government-could-push-provinces-on-vaccine-mandate-for-workers-document-says\/#.YVswi9XMKUm\">reports<\/a>. Although public health is under provincial jurisdiction, documents say the federal government could consider making vaccines \u201ca national interest item.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jab them:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>,<strong> Andre Picard<\/strong> makes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-every-health-care-worker-needs-to-be-vaccinated-without-exception-or\/\">a compelling argument<\/a> that health care workers should be compelled to get jabbed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MPs also:<\/strong> And the Hill Times <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hilltimes.com\/2021\/10\/04\/all-mps-should-be-fully-vaccinated-before-they-return-to-the-house-of-commons-period\/320635\">argues that<\/a> MPs need to be vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>22 per cent:<\/strong>\u00a0A new poll shows <strong>Jason Kenney<\/strong> is so unpopular that he could be doomed, veteran\u00a0<em>Calgary Herald<\/em> columnist <strong>Don Braid<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/opinion\/columnists\/braid-kenneys-ucp-leadership-on-life-support-according-to-pollsters-latest-survey\">writes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text\"><strong>\u2014 Stephen Maher<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
