Here\u2019s how to set it up for private, internal use on Ubuntu Linux.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"productive-chatting\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chatting_is_Productive\"><\/span>Chatting is Productive?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to dismiss tools like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/intl\/en-gb\/\">Slack<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=csit\/14248&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-gb%2Fmicrosoft-teams%2Fgroup-chat-software\">Microsoft Teams<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/rocket.chat\/\">Rocket.Chat<\/a> as nothing more than instant messenger clients. They\u2019re much more than that. Used properly, these enterprise messaging platforms encourage and simplify collaboration within\u2014and between\u2014departments and teams.<\/p>\n<p>Easy and fast communication between team members can only be a good thing. The ability to share images, documents, and video clips enhances the standard text message format and is key to the efficient collaboration that these tools can bring. The im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>cy of the communication simply cannot be replicated using email.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The Best Open Source Alternatives to Slack<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All these collaborative chat tools let you segregate conversations by whatever categories make sense to you, such as teams, projects, or topics. Typically these are called rooms or channels.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these collaborative tools accept plug-ins and work hard to foster an ecosystem of integration partners. For example you can have your favorite Git cloud repository send a message to you\u2014or to a channel\u2014when someone makes a commit or a merge request, or a CI\/CD automated build completes or bombs out.<\/p>\n<p>Rocket.Chat is an open source product. You can use it at no cost, or pay for more features and support. You can also self-host your own Rocket.Chat server. Part of the benefit of a chat system like this is you can connect to it from anywhere, using mobile <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s or even a web interface.<\/p>\n<p>Rocket.Chat can do that, and its documentation covers automatically\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.rocket.chat\/installing-and-updating\/snaps\/auto-ssl-with-snaps\">obtaining an SSL\/TLS certificate<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0Let\u2019s Encrypt. But if you just want to dip your toe in the water and see whether this type of tool will work for you or not, you can quickly set up Rocket.Chat for in-house use only, and without exposing anything to the outside world.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to show you here. We\u2019ll\u00a0install and configure Rocket.Chat for internal use, over a private network. We used a pre-release build of Ubuntu 21.10 as our chat server.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"installing-rocket.chat\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installing_RocketChat\"><\/span>Installing Rocket.Chat<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/snapcraft.io\/\">snap<\/a> for Rocket.Chat, so installation should be painless. Snaps are designed to be easy to install, they\u2019re isolated from the rest of your system, and they\u2019re auto-updated.
