walked away from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Agreement-For-Bringing-Peace-to-Afghanistan-02.29.20.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">President Donald Trump\u2019s peace deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan<\/a>. Instead,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/bidens-afghanistan-exit-raises-questions-about-his-foreign-policy-record-11629035042?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">ignoring warnings from his military advisers<\/a>\u00a0that the U.S.-supported regime could collapse, he hastily withdrew U.S. troops. The Afghan fiasco has made\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/biden-stop-terrorism-afghanistan-al-qaeda-islamic-state-taliban-jihadist-islamist-11629376977?mod=hp_opin_pos_3&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">combating terrorism<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/putin-rebuffed-u-s-plans-for-bases-near-afghanistan-at-summit-with-biden-11629398848?mod=hp_lead_pos9&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">more difficult<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/how-joe-biden-broke-nato-allies-boris-johnson-angela-merkel-emmanuel-macron-11629406300?mod=hp_opin_pos_1&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">stained our nation\u2019s honor<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2021-08-18\/afghanistan-s-fall-leaves-u-s-allies-britain-and-europe-to-pick-up-the-pieces\" class=\"icon none\">betrayed<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-20\/biden-assured-allies-in-june-u-s-would-ensure-kabul-s-stability?cmpid=BBD082021_CUS&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=210820&amp;utm_campaign=closeamericas\" class=\"icon none\">allies<\/a>\u00a0and damaged\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2021\/08\/21\/the-fiasco-in-afghanistan-is-a-grave-blow-to-americas-standing\" class=\"icon none\">America\u2019s credibility as a reliable partner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       He suffers the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2021\/feb\/11\/biden-and-democrats-unwanted-immigration-reforms-o\/\" class=\"icon none\">delusion that U.S. aid can turn around dysfunctional regimes in Central America<\/a>\u00a0and stem the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/migrant-border-arrests-in-july-surge-to-highest-level-in-21-years-11628799813?mod=article_inline&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">record surge of illegal immigration<\/a>. That\u2019s nation building, and it\u2019s failed in Latin America since\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jfklibrary.org\/learn\/about-jfk\/jfk-in-history\/alliance-for-progress\" class=\"icon none\">President John F. Kennedy\u2019s Alliance for Progress<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Crime_inflation_and_delta\"><\/span>Crime, inflation and delta<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The $1.9 trillion American Recovery Act was excessive, and now we face a\u00a0bout with stagflat<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.project-syndicate.org\/commentary\/mild-stagflation-is-here-and-could-persist-or-deepen-by-nouriel-roubini-2021-08\" class=\"icon none\">ion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has done little about the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/01\/us\/shootings-in-us.html\" class=\"icon none\">surge in crime in America\u2019s big cities<\/a>\u2014especially\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/police-consent-decrees-crime-jump-reforms-330f12b6-01ef-48ad-9e84-a65b4d78e7e7.html\" class=\"icon none\">those burdened<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/file\/925901\/download\" class=\"icon none\">Justice Department police-practices consent decrees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Add bungling the\u00a0d<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/28\/briefing\/mask-guidance-cdc-vaccinated.html\" class=\"icon none\">elta variant and mask policies<\/a>\u00a0and businesses that can\u2019t find enough workers, because\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/job-openings-are-at-record-highs-why-arent-unemployed-americans-filling-them-11625823021?mod=flipboard&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">Biden\u2019s stay-at-home payments<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/unemployment-benefits-forever-janet-yellen-marty-walsh-11629494576?mod=hp_opin_pos_5&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">discourage<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-08-24\/u-s-food-suppliers-are-having-trouble-keeping-shelves-stocked?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=210825&amp;utm_campaign=bop\" class=\"icon none\">work<\/a>. It\u2019s no wonder\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/08\/03\/sean-patrick-maloney-democrats-house-majority-502265\" class=\"icon none\">President Biden\u2019s job approval rating<\/a>\u00a0has\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/other\/president-biden-job-approval-7320.html\" class=\"icon none\">fallen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The conventional wisdom is that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrat-congressional-committee-sean-patrick-maloney-dccc-biden-midterms-2022-spending-covid-reconcilliation-11628711192?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">midterms are a referendum on the incumbent president<\/a>\u00a0but most presidents eligible for another term win re-election\u2014no matter how poorly their party faired in prior congressional contests. But midterms do offer voters an opportunity to rein in presidents who often act as if they have a mandate to impose radical change when they don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Americans are a much more moderate and cautious people than the tropism of the left and right wings of the Democratic and Republican parties and excitable <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> analysts.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_math\"><\/span>The math<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Since political parties emerged in the 1820s, the party of the incumbent president has lost seats in the House in 34 of 36 midterm elections. The opposing party has gained an average of 34 seats, and the GOP needs to pick up four to capture a majority.<\/p>\n<p>Just before the Afghanistan debacle, House Democratic Campaign Chairman Sean Maloney circulated polling data to his members that showed them trailing by\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/08\/03\/sean-patrick-maloney-democrats-house-majority-502265\" class=\"icon none\">six points in battleground districts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>The GOP controls the redistricting process for 187 seats and Democrats only 75 with the remaining mostly in the hands of independent commissions. After Afghanistan, Biden won\u2019t be much of an asset on the campaign trail, and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/politics\/1003096\/democrats-kamala-harris-problem\" class=\"icon none\">Vice President Kamala Harris appears politically inept<\/a>\u00a0and often acerbic.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have a few cards yet to play. States and cities have\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-08-17\/states-are-slow-to-spend-american-rescue-plan-covid-aid\" class=\"icon none\">lots of COVID relief money left to spend<\/a>, and Democratic governors and mayors can spread that around to lock-in voter loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>Both parties have high-profile divisive figures\u2014Bernie Sanders and AOC for the Democrats and Trump for the Republicans\u2014who pull their moderate members to extreme positions and out of line with critical swing voters.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Promises_to_voters\"><\/span>Promises to voters<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Out of all that, the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/covid-checks-child-tax-credit-families-ctc-entintlement-reform-welfare-democrats-11629313977?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">Democrats have perfected buy now and pay later for voters<\/a>. Biden, inspired by pressure from the hard left, promises a permanent regular monthly child allowance to middle-class families in the form of the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/28\/fact-sheet-the-american-families-plan\/\" class=\"icon none\">Child Tax Credit, enhanced tax breaks for child-care expenses, paid family-leave and other goodies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaker Nancy Pelosi is betting the Democratic Party can rally its base and keep swing voters by delivering this package of new and enhanced entitlements. The\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/democrats-weigh-cutting-programs-or-reducing-scope-to-trim-3-5-trillion-bill-11633273309?mod=hp_lead_pos1&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">$3.5 trillion reconciliation package likely will be scaled back<\/a>. So will the proposed new taxes but the program will still speak to most of the Democrats\u2019 targeted constituencies.<\/p>\n<p>The combination will unleash a torrent of additional deficit spending, printing press monetary policy and inflation, but much of the pain is beyond November 2022 and budget warnings make voters\u2019 eyes glaze over.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/americas-failures-in-afghanistan-were-bipartisan-and-long-running-11629118830?mod=wsjhp_columnists_pos2&amp;mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">Americans are war weary<\/a>\u00a0and memories of the\u00a0Afghanistan mess will fade by November\u00a02022\u2014unless we get another 9-11 scale attack. Instead, they could be grateful with more help raising children, medical expenses and the high cost of college.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Republican_program\"><\/span>No Republican program<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>More important, though, the GOP doesn\u2019t have a program but to oppose all the benefits Democrats are doling out. To economic historians, Republicans may prove prescient in their warnings, but the pandemic has conditioned middle-class voters to stimulus checks and child allowances.<\/p>\n<p>The Republicans carry a lot of baggage. They are associated with the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/08\/03\/us\/politics\/biden-covid-republican-governors.html\" class=\"icon none\">antivax<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/31\/world\/greg-abbott-mask-vaccine-mandate.html\" class=\"icon none\">antimask<\/a>\u00a0hysteria through\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/roberthart\/2021\/07\/28\/5-republican-governors-oppose-cdc-mask-guidance-as-covid-cases-hospitalizations-surge-nationwide\/?sh=1aff0e3b5518\" class=\"icon none\">governors that oppose mandates<\/a>.
