“#Firefox Is Getting Ads in Your Search Bar”<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a move that\u2019s sure to make no one happ<\/a>y, Firefox is getting\u00a0sponsored address bar suggestions. This is sure to upset many Firefox users, and it\u2019ll be interesting to see what the move does to Mozilla\u2019s market share in the browser space.<\/p>\n

The new feature, which Mozilla calls Firefox Suggest<\/a>, is currently available for a limited number of users in the US only. The company describes it as \u201ca new feature that serves as a trustworthy guide to the better web, surfacing relevant information and sites to help you accomplish your goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen contextual suggestions are enabled, Firefox Suggest uses your city location and search keywords to make contextual suggestions from Firefox and our partners while keeping your privacy in mind,\u201d a Firefox support page<\/a> says.<\/p>\n

That all sounds pretty useful, but it\u2019s this part that\u2019s sure to upset a ton of Firefox users:
\u201cBeginning in Firefox version 92, you will also receive new, relevant suggestions from our trusted partners based on what you\u2019re searching for. No new data is collected, stored, or shared to make these new recommendations.\u201d<\/p>\n

That means that you\u2019ll see the browser history and all of the other stuff Firefox used to suggest, but now you\u2019ll see results from Mozilla\u2019s partners, which is basically an excellent way of saying that you\u2019ll see ads in your navigation bar.<\/p>\n

Based on the image shared by Mozilla, the results don\u2019t look overly intrusive, as they appear right alongside the other options, but it\u2019s still annoying to see even more ads when browsing the web.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, you can turn this feature off quickly enough. In the menu on the top of the screen, click \u201cFirefox,\u201d then \u201cPreferences.\u201d Head to \u201cPrivacy & Security\u201d and go to \u201cAddress Bar \u2014 Firefox Suggest.\u201d Under this section, you\u2019ll see \u201cContextual suggestions\u201d and \u201cInclude occasional sponsored suggestions.\u201d Turn these off, and you won\u2019t see any more ads in your address bar.<\/p>\n

You will also need to opt into Firefox\u2019s \u201cAllow suggestions\u201d feature when prompted in Firefox 92, so this isn\u2019t something you\u2019ll have to worry about automatically happening to your web browsing experience.<\/p>\n

With all that said, Firefox says this \u201chelps fund development and optimization,\u201d so if you want to support Firefox and you don\u2019t find the suggestions to be too intrusive, you might want to enable the new feature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
