There is no one currently holding Mark accountable but himself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as Facebook is operating in the dark, it is accountable to no one and it will continue to make choices that go against the common good,\u201d she added,\u00a0calling on the company to declare \u201cmoral bankruptcy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Material leaked by Haugen showed that Facebook has\u00a0downplayed Instagram\u2019s negative effects on teens\u2019 mental health\u00a0despite damning internal research. Others showed that\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-facebook-files-11631713039\">the company exempts popular users from some content moderation rules<\/a>\u00a0and has failed to crack down on drug cartels and human traffickers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe documents I have provided to Congress prove that Facebook has repeatedly misled the public,\u201d said Haugen in testimony to the Senate Commerce Committee\u2019s consumer protection subcommittee. \u201cI came forward at great personal risk because I believe we still have time to act.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/mark-zuckerberg-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Mark Zuckerberg\" class=\"wp-image-19703220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/mark-zuckerberg-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/mark-zuckerberg-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/mark-zuckerberg-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Frances Haugen claims that no one holds Facebook\u2019s founder and CEO accountable but himself.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the face of Haugen\u2019s revelations,\u00a0Zuckerberg has <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared flippant.\u00a0He has not commented on the whistleblower or the Journal\u2019s articles beyond making a joke about a surfboard \u2014 and posted a video of himself going sailing on Sunday, the same day that Haugen\u00a0revealed her identity in an interview with \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRather than taking responsibility and showing leadership, Mr. Zuckerberg is going sailing,\u201d said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn) during the hearing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Haugen\u2019s assertion came days after Facebook\u2019s safety chief\u00a0Antigone Davis denied in a hearing with the same Senate subcommittee\u00a0that Zuckerberg has unilateral control over decisions at Facebook.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Davis also downplayed the research leaked by Haugen, arguing that it did not establish a \u201ccausal\u201d connection between Instagram and teen mental health issues.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" a uniquely harmful product for teens, arguing that its algorithm hooks teens by pushing addictive content that can foster mental health issues like eating disorders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cTikTok is about doing fun things with your friends, Snapchat is about faces and augmented reality, Reddit is about ideas,\u201d she said. \u201cBut Instagram is about bodies, and about comparing lifestyles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone tried to minimize\u00a0Haugen\u2019s testimony\u00a0on Tuesday,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mobile.twitter.com\/andymstone\/status\/1445403468945055755\">writing on Twitter<\/a>\u00a0that she \u201cdid not work on child safety or Instagram or research these issues and has no direct knowledge of the topic from her work at Facebook.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stone also\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/andymstone\/status\/1445445524350513155\">shared<\/a>\u00a0a statement from Facebook\u2019s director of policy communications Lena Pietsch saying Haugen had \u201ctestified more than six times to not working on the subject matter in question.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" were working on child safety and Instagram \u2014 not just her word.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Senators were chomping at the bit for regulation, repeatedly comparing Facebook to big tobacco \u2014 but it\u2019s unclear exactly what form that regulation will take.<\/p>\n<p>Haugen said she would support rules requiring social media companies to display posts in chronological form, meaning the most recent posts are displayed first, rather than the current system of \u201cengagement-based ranking\u201d that she said maximizes extreme views and clickbait.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want computers deciding Federal Trade Commission\u00a0seeking to break up Facebook by making it sell properties like Instagram and WhatsApp. Haugen argued that breaking up Facebook wouldn\u2019t change harmful algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere during her three-hour testimony, Haugen raised national security concerns about her former employer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook\u2019s consistent understaffing of the counterespionage, information operations and counterterrorism teams is a national security issue,\u201d she said. \u201cI have strong national security concerns about how Facebook operates today.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response, Democratic Sen.
