“#Adele Finally Addresses Cultural App<\/a>ropriation Backlash From THAT Carnival Look

\nAdele<\/strong> is owning up to her mistakes.<\/p>\n

The Grammy<\/strong> winner is on the cusp of a new chapter, but before then, she\u2019s addressing some of the issues from the last one. Specifically, she responded to criticism of her infamous Instagram<\/strong> post where she had dressed up for the 2020 Notting Hill Carnival, an annual event in West London celebrating Caribbean culture.<\/p>\n

Wearing the Jamaican flag as a bikini top was one thing, but what most folks found offensive was the Bantu knots she wore her hair in \u2014 which came across like Black cosplay. Speaking with British Vogue<\/em>, the songstress reflected:<\/p>\n

\u201cI totally get why people felt like it was appropriating. \u2026 I had thought, if you don\u2019t go dressed to celebrate the Jamaican culture \u2014 and in so many ways we\u2019re so entwined in that part of London \u2014 then it\u2019s a little bit like, \u2018What you coming for, then?’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

But she now realizes that was the exact wrong instinct for our current moment:<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t read the f**king room.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Hmm\u2026 Almost seems like that\u2019s a direct reference to one of the look\u2019s biggest critics, journalist\u00a0Ernest Owens<\/strong>, who tweeted:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf 2020 couldn\u2019t get anymore bizarre, Adele is giving us Bantu knots and cultural appropriation that nobody asked for. This officially marks all of the top white women in pop as problematic. Hate to see it\u2026 I\u2019m too old and Black to be defending and making excuses for white people who still can\u2019t read the damn room in 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Well, if she can\u2019t read the room she can darn well read\u00a0Twitter<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

In addition to backlash, the Hello<\/em> vocalist also suffered real-time consequences for putting her hair in Bantu knots:<\/p>\n
