Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>, which last week announced a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-technology-business-misinformation-public-health-d68aa3f6f6bc44e36c77c33cff4a450a\">sweeping crackdown<\/a>\u00a0on vaccine misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve heard directly from a growing number of our advertising and publisher partners who have expressed concerns about ads that run alongside or promote inaccurate claims about climate change,\u201d Google said. \u201cAdvertisers simply don\u2019t want their ads to appear next to this content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Publishers and creators on YouTube \u201cdon\u2019t want ads promoting these claims to appear on their pages or videos,\u201d according to Google.<\/p>\n<p>The restrictions \u201cwill prohibit ads for, and monetization of, content that contradicts well-established scientific consensus around the existence and causes of climate change,\u201d the\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/google-ads\/answer\/11221321\">blog post said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Along with addressing publishers\u2019 frustrations, the changes are apparently intended to counter online influencers who monetize, or make money from, YouTube videos promoting climate change denial theories by putting ads on them.<\/p>\n<p>Limits will be placed on content calling climate change a hoax or denying that greenhouse gas emissions and human activity have contributed to the Earth\u2019s long-term warming, the company said.<\/p>\n<p>Experts questioned whether the changes would be effective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow will they determine what is misinformation (i.e. lies) or simply incomplete or misleading information?\u201d said Lisa Schipper, environmental social <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> research fellow at the University of Oxford\u2019s Environmental Change Institute.<\/p>\n<p>She cited as an example images of clean energy by fossil fuel companies. \u201cIn some ways, these types of adverts that suggest a different kind of truth might be even more damaging because they look innocuous, while they simultaneously serve to greenwash the company,\u201d Schipper said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Google will use both automated tools and human reviewers to enforce the policy when it takes effect in November for publishers and YouTube creators and in December for advertisers.<\/p>\n<p>Advertisements will still be allowed on content that\u2019s about other related topics like public debates on climate policy.<\/p>\n<p>However, such debates can be just as polarized, warned Steve Smith, executive director of Oxford\u2019s Net Zero climate neutrality research program and CO2RE research hub on greenhouse gas removal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMisinformation is at play in online discussions around low-carbon energy, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> and food, just as much as it is over climate science,\u201d Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>Google is one of the two dominant players in the global digital ad industry, earning $147 billion in ad revenue last year. Facebook, the other big player, prohibits ads used to spread misinformation though it doesn\u2019t list specific topics including climate change denial.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Google rolled out new features aimed at helping users reduce their carbon footprints, including a search function that shows which flights have lower emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Misinformation and the role that social media companies giants have in amplifying it has become a big concern for many people. Some 95% of Americans said misinformation is a problem when trying to access important information,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnorc.org\/projects\/the-american-public-views-the-spread-of-misinformation-as-a-major-problem\/\">according to a poll<\/a>\u00a0Friday from the Pearson Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s problem with false information came into the spotlight this week when Frances Haugen, a former data scientist-turned-whistleblower,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/facebook-haugen-congress-testimony-1daac7a76ca7bf0b0802cc46e732b51b\">told members of Congress<\/a>\u00a0that the company knows its platform spreads misinformation but refuses to make changes that could hurt its profits.\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
