But few are very concerned that they themselves might be responsible, according to a new poll from\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnorc.org\/projects\/the-american-public-views-the-spread-of-misinformation-as-a-major-problem\/\">the Pearson Institute and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Ninety-five percent of Americans identified misinformation as a problem when they\u2019re trying to access important information. About half put a great deal of blame on the US government, and about three-quarters point to social media users and tech companies. Yet only 2 in 10 Americans say they\u2019re very concerned that they have personally spread misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>More, about 6 in 10, are at least somewhat concerned that their friends or family members have been part of the problem.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Poll-5.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Subcommittee chairman Sen. Speller trusts\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/coronavirus-vaccine\">COVID-19 vaccines<\/a>; her family does not. She believes the misinformation her family has seen on TV or read on questionable <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> sites has swayed them in their decision to stay unvaccinated against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, some of her family members think she\u2019s crazy for trusting the government for information about COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do feel like they believe I\u2019m misinformed. I\u2019m the one that\u2019s blindly following what the government is saying, that\u2019s something I hear a lot,\u201d Speller said. \u201cIt\u2019s come to the point where it does create a lot of tension with my family and some of my friends as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speller isn\u2019t the only one who may be having those disagreements with her family.<\/p>\n<p>The survey found that 61% of Republicans say the US government has a lot of responsibility for spreading misinformation, compared with just 38% of Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s more bipartisan agreement, however, about the role that social media companies, including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, play in the spread of misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the poll, 79% of Republicans and 73% of Democrats said\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-technology-business-misinformation-public-health-d68aa3f6f6bc44e36c77c33cff4a450a\">social media companies<\/a>\u00a0have a great deal or quite a bit of responsibility for misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>And that type of rare partisan agreement among Americans could spell trouble for tech giants like Facebook, the largest and most profitable of the social media platforms, which is under fire from Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Poll-4.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Subcommittee ranking member Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said during a meeting of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Consumer Protection. Democrats and Republicans ended the hearing with acknowledgment that regulations must be introduced to change the way Facebook amplifies its content and targets users.<\/p>\n<p>The poll also revealed that Americans are willing to blame just about everybody but themselves for spreading misinformation, with 53% of them saying they\u2019re not concerned that they\u2019ve spread misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this a lot of times where people are very worried about misinformation but they think it\u2019s something that h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to other people \u2014 other people get fooled by it, other people spread it,\u201d said Lisa Fazio, a Vanderbilt University psychology professor who studies how false claims spread. \u201cMost people don\u2019t recognize their own role in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"966\" height=\"757\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/poll-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=966\" alt=\"A new Pearson Institute\/AP-NORC poll finds about half of Americans are at least somewhat concerned that they have spread misinformation online. \" class=\"wp-image-19741125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/poll-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 966w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/poll-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=483 483w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\"\/><figcaption>A new Pearson Institute\/AP-NORC poll finds about half of Americans are at least somewhat concerned that they have spread misinformation online. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Younger adults tend to be more concerned that they\u2019ve shared falsehoods, with 25% of those ages 18 to 29 very or extremely worried that they have spread misinformation, compared to just 14% of adults age 60 and older. Sixty-three percent of older adults are not concerned, compared with roughly half of other Americans.<\/p>\n<p>Yet it\u2019s older adults who should be more worried about spreading misinformation, given that research shows they\u2019re more likely to share an article from a false news website, Fazio said.<\/p>\n<p>Before she shares things with family or her friends on Facebook, Speller tries her best to make sure the information she\u2019s passing on about important topics like COVID-19 has been peer-reviewed or comes from a credible medical institution. Still, Speller acknowledges there has to have been a time or two that she \u201cliked\u201d or hit \u201cshare\u201d on a post that didn\u2019t get all the facts quite right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure it has happened,\u201d Speller said. \u201cI tend to not share things on social media that I didn\u2019t find on verified sites. I\u2019m open to that if someone were to point out, \u2018Hey this isn\u2019t right,\u2019 I would think, OK, let me check this.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
