According to career advice Web site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/TheBalanceCareers.com\">Balance Careers<\/a>, at some big law firms, associates \u201care expected to bill at least 2,000 hours per year.\u201d That means spending <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/area\/department\/cdo\/document\/billable_hour.pdf\">almost 3,000 hours on the job annually, according to the Yale Office of Development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t think that saying something like that could get me in trouble,\u201d Smith said. But it wasn\u2019t long before she was contacted by human resources. \u201cI was told I went beyond the responsibilities of the job I was hired for,\u201d said Smith. She asked if she was fired. \u201cNot yet\u201d was the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Smith thought about complaining to one of the firm\u2019s partners, but fearing it could cost her the job, she bit her tongue.<\/p>\n<p>All too often, employees choose to grin and bear undesirable job-related scenarios rather than risk airing their grievances. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/elementsgs.com\/top-hr-complaints-statistics\/\">study by Elements Global Services<\/a> found that 49 percent of workers have neglected to report something for fear of retaliation. And who can blame them, when 63 percent of employees who file an equal employment discrimination complaint lose their jobs. If you don\u2019t like it here, you\u2019re free to leave,\u2019\u2009\u201d said Smith<\/p>\n<p>Big law is hardly the only sector where this h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens. Howard Lutnick, CEO of financial services firm <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cantor.com\">Cantor Fitzgerald L.P.<\/a>, recently warned associates about complaining. \u201cYoung bankers who decide they\u2019re working too hard \u2014 choose another living is my view,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>But the balance of power is beginning to shift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst there was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/metoomvmt.org\/\">#MeToo<\/a>, and now COVID has made everything screwy. Many have decided, \u2018I\u2019m not going to deal with it [bad bosses, poor conditions, company policies, bullying] anymore,\u2019\u2009\u201d said attorney, author and workplace coach <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/heatherhansenpresents.com\/\">Heather Hansen<\/a>. \u201cPeople are burned out, their reserves limited. So aside from the usual functions like recruiting, benefits and compensation, the Flatiron team focuses on organizational effectiveness, talent development and learning. These sites are typically easy to use, encrypted, secure, anonymous and offer options around taking action.<\/p>\n<p>Companies are also more transparent thanks to sites like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glassdoor.com\/\">Glassdoor<\/a> and \u201cBest Places to Work\u201d reports, but all this doesn\u2019t mean that employees who have bad experiences should keep silent.<\/p>\n<p>Workplace consultant, investigator and former trial lawyer<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tracyexplains.com\/\"> Tracy A. Pearson, J.D.<\/a>, said that if a worker believes they have experienced bullying, harassment, intimidation, retaliation or threats, they should report the problem right away. HR is supposed to investigate the matter or refer it out for investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce the complaint is received, the worker is protected from retaliation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people become their own worst enemy by not reporting soon enough and they allow it to go on for too long, which can have devastating effects on health and happiness. I cannot stress enough: It\u2019s the responsibility of an organization to provide a healthy and safe work environment, but it cannot resolve issues if it doesn\u2019t know about them.
