\n Civil rights icon John Lewis\u2019 casket will arrive at the US Capitol Monday afternoon to begin his lie in state in the Capitol rotunda.<\/p>\n

Rep. Lewis (D-Ga.) is expected to arrive at Joint Base Andrews at 11 a.m., at which point a motorcade procession will take his remains through numerous significant historical landmarks \u2014 including the Lincoln Memorial, the African American Museum and Black Lives Matter Plaza \u2014 before reaching the Capitol.<\/p>\n

The Georgia Democrat\u2019s casket will then be brought up the steps of the Capitol and inside the rotunda, where Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) will deliver remarks during an invitation-only ceremony beginning at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

According to plans released by Pelosi and McConnell, their speeches will be followed be a presentation of wreaths by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D-Calif.) and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC).<\/p>\n

Afterward, House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC), a longtime friend of Lewis, will give the benediction.<\/p>\n

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden and Vice President Mike Pence, along with their wives Dr. Jill Biden and second lady Karen Pence, respectively, will be among those attending Monday\u2019s ceremony.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was limited in attendance size in an effort to adhere to social<\/a> distancing guidelines as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, Pelosi and McConnell said.<\/p>\n

At 6 p.m., Lewis\u2019 casket will be moved to to the steps at the East Front of the Capitol for public viewing until 10 PM. The public viewing will resume Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. and go until 10 p.m.<\/p>\n

The decision to move his body outside will allow mourners to walk past his casket while still adhering to CDC guidelines to stop the spread of the novel virus.\u00a0Pelosi and McConnell said in their announcement that social distancing rules would be \u201cstrictly enforced.\u201d<\/p>\n

When announcing plans for funeral and memorial services, Lewis\u2019 family asked that people not travel<\/a> to the nation\u2019s capital from across the country as a result of the pandemic.<\/p>\n

Instead, they requested people post virtual tributes to social media and use the hashtags, \u201c#BelovedCommunity\u201d or \u201c#HumanDignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lewis died earlier this month from stage-4 pancreatic cancer at the age of 80. He had been diagnosed in December of last year.<\/p>\n

First elected in 1986 and lauded as \u201cthe conscience<\/a> of Congress,\u201d Lewis, a staunch Democrat, commanded respect from both sides of the aisle.<\/p>\n

He forged his reputation in the 1960s, most notably during the 1965 civil rights march in Selma, Alabama, during which he suffered a skull fracture at the end of a police billy club.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is still work yet to be done,\u201d he urged during a 50th-anniversary event at the bridge in 2015.<\/p>\n

McConnell had hailed Lewis as a \u201cpioneering civil rights leader who put his life on the line to fight racism, promote equal rights, and bring our nation into greater alignment with its founding principles.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelosi described Lewis as \u201cone of the greatest heroes of American history\u201d and \u201ca titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
