In contrast, the uppermost fan strata are composed of boulder conglomerates, which imply deposition by episodic high-energy floods,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abl4051\">the study\u2019s authors wrote<\/a>. \u201cThis sedimentary succession indicates a transition, from a sustained hydrologic activity in a persistent lake environment, to highly energetic short-duration fluvial flows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever before has such well-preserved stratigraphy been visible on Mars,\u201d Nicolas Mangold, a Perseverance scientist from the Laboratoire de Plan\u00e9tologie et G\u00e9odynamique in Nantes, France, and lead author of the paper,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/jpl\/nasa-s-perseverance-sheds-more-light-on-jezero-crater-s-watery-past\">said in a NASA release<\/a>. \u201cThis is the key observation that enables us to once and for all confirm the presence of a lake and river delta at Jezero. And the boulders at the top will enable us to sample old pieces of crustal rocks.
