Thanks to an emulator, you can simulate an Alto in your browser. But first, let\u2019s look at why the Alto was special.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Tremendous_Influence\"><\/span>Tremendous Influence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 1973, engineers at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PARC_(company)\">Xerox Palo Alto Research Center<\/a> (PARC) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/752377&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fresearch%2Fuploads%2Fprod%2F2016%2F11%2F25-Alto-as-pub.pdf\">created<\/a> a revolutionary computer called the Xerox Alto that pioneered the mouse-based graphical user interface (GUI), bitmapped graphics, local networking, laser printing, networked computer gaming, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smalltalk\">object-oriented software development<\/a>, and much more.<\/p>\n<p>The Alto\u2019s bitmapped display and paper-white portrait monitor made it an ideal platform for innovations in computer document preparation, including the first <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/WYSIWYG\">WYSIWYG<\/a> (\u201cwhat you see is what you get\u201d) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dhmz68CII9Y\">word processors<\/a> that supported multiple fonts. It also hosted <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GgO7Ww8NXCk\">early drawing programs<\/a> and font editors that would later revolutionize publishing.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xerox Parc - Office Alto Commercial\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M0zgj2p7Ww4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When a Xerox PARC engineer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newyorker.com%2Fmagazine%2F2011%2F05%2F16%2Fcreation-myth\">invented the laser printer<\/a> in the early 1970s, a networked pool of Alto computers could share the high-quality printer. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.righto.com\/2018\/01\/xerox-altos-3-mbs-ethernet-building.html\">thanks to Ethernet<\/a> (also invented at PARC), a local group of Alto computers could exchange files, share an ARPANET connection, or even play <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s against each other.<\/p>\n<p>While Xerox was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xerox_Star\">slow to capitalize<\/a> on the stunning inventions embodied in the Alto, it wasn\u2019t shy about showing them off. Many researchers in the 1970s at universities (and visitors from other companies) used Alto units, and the computer inspired the creation of many early <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PERQ\">single-user graphical workstations<\/a>. And in a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=M0zgj2p7Ww4\">1979 commercial<\/a>, Xerox touted the capabilities of the Alto, including email and networked printing, to the public.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Yesterday&#039;s Computer of Tomorrow: The Xerox Alto \u2502Draw and Markup Demos\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GgO7Ww8NXCk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Most famously, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newyorker.com%2Fmagazine%2F2011%2F05%2F16%2Fcreation-myth\">Steve Jobs visited Xerox PARC in 1979<\/a> and came away convinced that Xerox held the key to the future of personal computing. That inspiration led to the release of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/220136\/30-years-of-the-apple-lisa-and-the-apple-iie.html\">Apple Lisa<\/a> in 1983 and the Macintosh the following year.<\/p>\n<p>Over less than a decade, Xerox produced over 2000 Alto units in two models (Alto I and Alto II), but the computer was never officially on sale. Aside from its internal use within Xerox, Xerox <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/byte-magazine-1981-09\/page\/n59\/mode\/2up?view=theater\">donated 50 units to universities around the US<\/a> in 1979, and several were in use in the White House during Jimmy Carter\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>The Foundation of the Internet: TCP\/IP Turns 40<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Xerox_Alto_Specs\"><\/span>Xerox Alto Specs<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Considering its development in 1972, it\u2019s no surprise that the Alto didn\u2019t use a microprocessor. Instead, it used a custom <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arithmetic_logic_unit\">ALU<\/a> composed of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpushack.com\/2010\/10\/18\/before-the-pc-before-apple-was-the-xerox-alto\/\">several TI 74181 chips<\/a>. Here\u2019s a look at the Alto\u2019s basic specifications.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Custom 16-bit CPU running at 5.8 MHz<\/li>\n<li>128\u00a0to 512 KB of RAM<\/li>\n<li>A monochome (black or white only) 606\u00d7808 pixel bitmapped raster display on a vertically-oriented full-page CRT monitor<\/li>\n<li>Storage provided on 2.5 MB removable hard disk cartridges<\/li>\n<li>Three-button mouse<\/li>\n<li>Five-key <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chorded_keyboard\">chording keyset<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Modular keyboard<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_The_Alto_Yourself_Today\"><\/span>Try The Alto Yourself Today<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Using only a web browser, you can try using vintage Xerox Alto software today without needing to download any special software. Under the large rectangle (which represents the virtual Alto screen), use the drop-down menu to select a disk image. This is equivalent to inserting a disk cartridge into a real Alto.<\/p>\n<p>For example, choose \u201cgames.dsk\u201d to load a disk full of games. Instead, you need to type commands to use it. Also, the preferred Alto file manager, Neptune, is graphical and mouse-based, but lacks icons or any kind of spatial interface. There\u2019s nary a folder to be found\u2014what gives?<\/p>\n<p>While much has been written about the influence of the Xerox Alto on Apple\u2019s Lisa and Macintosh computer systems, the Alto didn\u2019t originate the desktop file management metaphor\u2014with icons, folders, and spatial file browsing that those Apple computers borrowed and extended upon. Instead, that honor goes to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xerox_Star\">Xerox Star 8010 Information System\u2019s<\/a> Viewpoint operating system, launched in 1981. Each step along the way (from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NLS_(computer_system)\">NLS<\/a>, to Alto, to Star, Lisa, Mac, and beyond) added features and complexity.
