\nBrittany Murphy<\/strong>\u2019s December 20, 2009 death continues to mystify \u2014 and her husband\u2019s questionable behavior at the time certainly isn\u2019t helping clear anything up.<\/p>\n

In the new HBO Max<\/strong> documentary What Happ<\/a>ened, Brittany Murphy?<\/i>, former Radar Online<\/em> reporter Amber Ryland<\/strong> looked back at an encounter she had with the late star\u2019s husband Simon Monjack<\/strong> days after Murphy died of community-acquired pneumonia, iron-deficiency anemia, and multiple drug intoxication.<\/p>\n

Ryland explained that she had been covering the news<\/a> of the actress\u2019 sudden death at the time, recalling in a sneak peek of the film:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amount of reporters and paparazzi sort of dwindled off and we stayed. We were told to stay, spent the night in my car. It was almost 24\/7.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On Christmas Day, the journalist received a call from her boss, who told her to buy a bouquet of flowers and bring them to Murphy\u2019s house. When she rang the doorbell, Monjack answered. She remembered:<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Merry Christmas. I\u2019m just so sorry about Brittany.\u2019 I said, \u2018My card\u2019s there if you want to talk but no pressure.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ryland left the house, but said she was \u201cshocked\u201d to receive a call from Monjack less than an hour later.<\/p>\n

She continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cI said, \u2018Hi.\u2019 And he said, \u2018This is Amber, right?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Yeah.\u2019 And he said, \u2018Thank you. I got your flowers.\u2019 And he was kind of silent for a minute and he said, \u2018You know you\u2019re the only one I\u2019ve called.\u2019 And I said, \u2018Oh.\u2019 [He said,] \u2018You\u2019re the only one that I want to talk to.\u2019 I had access to him now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

As you likely know, Murphy died in December at just 32 years old; she was laid to rest on Christmas Eve of that year. Monjack died in May 2010 at the age of 40. Months later, the Los Angeles County coroner listed his cause of death as community-acquired acute bronchopneumonia and cardiomegaly with focal myocardial fibrosis as other significant conditions.<\/p>\n

The two-part doc features interviews with Murphy\u2019s family and, interestingly, Monjack\u2019s ex Elizabeth Ragsdale<\/b>, who claimed the producer lied to her about who he was. According to Ragsdale, she became pregnant shortly after she and Monjack got engaged, relatively early in their relationship. The screenwriter apparently insisted she give birth in the US, so he bought her a plane ticket to New York and told her he would meet her there \u2014 only, Monjack didn\u2019t come with her. She recalled in the doc:<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got to my little studio in New York, I called him and he answered. I said, \u2018Simon, I\u2019ve made it to\u2009\u2026\u2019 and before I could get that sentence out, he hung up on me. He left me pregnant and abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
