{"id":352946,"date":"2021-10-15T00:47:43","date_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:47:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/more-suicides-at-nyc-jails-this-year-than-past-five-combined\/"},"modified":"2021-10-15T00:47:43","modified_gmt":"2021-10-14T21:47:43","slug":"more-suicides-at-nyc-jails-this-year-than-past-five-combined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/more-suicides-at-nyc-jails-this-year-than-past-five-combined\/","title":{"rendered":"#More suicides at NYC jails this year than past five combined"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#More suicides at NYC jails this year than past five combined<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>The number of prisoners who killed themselves while in the custody of the city\u2019s Department of Correction in 2021 is more than the past five years combined, according to data released Thursday by a federal monitor.<\/p>\n<p>From January to September this year, five people in DOC custody committed suicide, compared to a total of four from 2016 to 2020, the federal monitoring team for the troubled Rikers Island wrote in a status report filed in Manhattan federal court. <\/p>\n<p>In a footnote, the monitoring team included the caveat that one of the five suicides in 2021 h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened after the inmate was granted compassionate release and two others were still being reviewed by the city Medical Examiner. <\/p>\n<p>In the report, the monitors, lead by Steve J. Martin, wrote that they remain \u201cgravely concerned\u201d about the dangerous conditions at city lockups \u2014 and were unconvinced that the leadership of the DOC has the compentency to remedy the situation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Monitoring Team remains concerned about whether Department leadership possess the level of competency to safely manage the jails,\u201d they wrote. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore specifically, an insular workforce that has very limited exposure to best practices is at a significant disadvantage in advancing reforms,\u201d they added. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/1209894580.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"The Vernon C. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Bill de Blasio responded Wednesday by vowing to move 200 women and transgender inmates to state-run prisons to help alleviate problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese actions will further help ease staffing concerns, capacity constraints, and improve safety for several hundred detainees until such time that the city can identify and implement a permanent solution that will bring justice to the situation at Rikers,\u201d Hochul said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
