criticism over his decision to take paternity leave while the country faces major supply-chain issues. But the controversy is also prompting renewed discussion among parents, parenting experts and others about the need for men to have time off following the birth of a child.<\/p>\n<p> Buttigieg, a candidate for the Democratic nomination in 2020 and former mayor of South Bend, Ind., and his husband, Chasten, recently became parents of twins through adoption. In an early September <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PeteButtigieg\/status\/1434167993769111552\" class=\"icon none\">tweet<\/a>, Buttigieg introduced the couple\u2019s infant twins, saying, \u201cWe are delighted to welcome Penelope Rose and Joseph August Buttigieg to our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Buttigieg was mostly \u201coffline\u201d from work during the first four weeks of parenting, according to a spokesperson for the Department of Transportation, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/west-wing-playbook\/2021\/10\/14\/can-pete-buttigieg-have-it-all-494710\" class=\"icon none\">as reported by Politico<\/a>. That prompted charges that the transportation secretary was neglecting his duties at a pivotal time, a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southbendtribune.com\/news\/local\/navy-reserve-to-deploy-buttigieg-to-afghanistan\/article_5ccb3a3a-1bd1-11e3-bec9-0019bb30f31a.html\" class=\"icon none\">situation he also navigated when service in the U.S. Navy Reserve required absences from South Bend\u2019s city hall<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Among the most vocal critics was Fox <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> host Tucker Carlson, who said on his program: \u201cPete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child. Paternity leave, they call it. Trying to figure out how to breastfeed, no word on how that went.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some critics have accused Carlson of being insensitive and homophobic. But perhaps of equal note are the questions being raised about paternity leave and whether its value and importance is misunderstood by society.<\/p>\n<p>For his part, Buttigieg, in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/07d41402-2815-46bf-8612-f5de0f7c8bbb\" class=\"icon none\">an interview late Friday on MSNBC<\/a>, said Carlson had demonstrated an unfamiliarity with the concepts of both bottle feeding and parental leave.<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, more companies have offered paid leave to both women and men following the birth or adoption of a child. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/about-shrm\/press-room\/press-releases\/pages\/new-shrm-research-shows-employers-offering-paid-leave-has-increased.aspx#:~:text=New%20SHRM%20Research%20Shows%20Employers%20Offering%20Paid%20Leave%20Has%20Increased,-September%2015%2C%202020&amp;text=Offering%20paid%20leave%20tends%20to,employee%20engagement%20(60%20percent)%3B\" class=\"icon none\">One survey<\/a>, from the Society for Human Resource Management and Oxford Economics, found that 55% of employers provide paid maternity leave and 45% provide paid paternity leave. Some states have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fatherly.com\/love-money\/paternity-leave-laws-state-us\/#:~:text=Five%20states%20currently%20mandate%20paid,provide%20paid%20leave%20to%20employees\" class=\"icon none\">even mandated<\/a> such leaves, though the U.S. doesn\u2019t have a federal mandate requiring paid parental leave, making it the only industrialized country in the world without one, according to the Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p>Advocates say these leaves ensure that employees are in better shape, physically and mentally, when they return to work and are thus more capable of doing a good job. But they also say that offering these leaves doesn\u2019t necessarily have to affect a company\u2019s bottom line. If anything, they argue, a leave benefit can serve as an inducement to attract and retain talent.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit<\/a> co-founder and venture capitalist Alexis Ohanian, an advocate of family-leave policies, is among those who say what\u2019s good for parents is also good for businesses. \u201cBy introducing better policies, having an open dialogue in the office about parental leave, and finding new solutions to support teams while these new parents are jumping through hurdles at home, business leaders can create a more equitable workplace and, in turn, retain employees,\u201d he was quoted as having told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90548828\/alexis-ohanian-why-now-is-the-time-to-de-stigmatize-paternity-leave-for-good\" class=\"icon none\">Fast Company<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The stakes arguably become higher when the employee taking leave is a chief executive of a company or, in the case of Buttigieg, a prominent government official. But examples abound of those who have done so without issue. <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>New Zealand\u2019s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, took <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-45027923\" class=\"icon none\">a six-week maternity leave<\/a> in 2018. And Ohanian, married to tennis star Serena Williams, took a four-month paternity leave from Reddit. Other CEOs and high-ranking executives have done so, as well, be they the leaders of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-bosses-who-walk-the-walk-on-paternity-leave-11558949400?mod=article_inline\" class=\"icon none\">a small software company<\/a> or a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jezebel.com\/facebook-employee-writes-about-what-he-learned-on-pater-708826203\" class=\"icon none\">one-time manager <\/a>of Facebook<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.15%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n       <\/p>\n<p>Still, many men and parenting advocates say there is a broader stigma attached to paternity leave, rooted in the traditional ideas that child rearing is a woman\u2019s job and that men must continue to work and provide for their families. That may explain why men hesitate to take extended leaves: A United State Department of Labor <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/sites\/dolgov\/files\/OASP\/legacy\/files\/PaternityBrief.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">report <\/a>found that 70% of men take off 10 days or fewer in connection with the birth or adoption of a child.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, some parents \u2014 men and women alike \u2014 fear that taking any leave could affect their job security. In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/deloitte-survey-less-than-half-of-people-surveyed-feel-their-organization-helps-men-feel-comfortable-taking-parental-leave-300284822.html\" class=\"icon none\">a 2016 Deloitte survey<\/a>, 54% of respondents said they would be perceived as lacking commitment to their job if they took parental leave.<\/p>\n<p>The paternity-leave situation is unsettling to men like Marley Jay, a Brooklyn, N.Y., father of two sons. For him, the leave was especially critical because he had to tend to his wife, who was recovering from an emergency C-section.<\/p>\n<p>But Anderson also said the bonding time with his child proved invaluable. \u201cI did feel more connected [to the baby]. I wasn\u2019t just this person coming home at the end of the day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Some men, however, are responding to the issue by not only asserting the need for paternity leave, but also fighting for the legal right to take such time off. Derek Rotondo sued his employer, JPMorgan Chase<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.92%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       for its alleged refusal to grant a 16-week leave. The case resulted in a $5 million class-action settlement.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, many women note that the need for paid maternity leave is still not as widely recognized as it should be. They speak to the fact that such leaves <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.workingmother.com\/mom-journalist-mother-pukka-to-businesses-maternity-leave-is-not-holiday-or-nice-break\" class=\"icon none\">are often falsely seen as some kind of \u201cvacation\u201d<\/a> rather than a critical time to tend to and bond with a newborn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t imagine anyone thinking this is a vacation,\u201d said Emily M.
