“#Valve Now Bans Steam Game<\/a>s Using Blockchain, NFT, or Crypto”<\/strong><\/p>\n

PC gaming may be an open ecosystem, but Valve sets the rules on Steam. Now, it app<\/a>ears that Valve is banning games with blockchain, NFT, and cryptocurrency technology<\/a> from its digital storefront.<\/p>\n

As of October 15, 2021, Valve lists \u201cApplications built on blockchain technology that issue or allow exchange of cryptocurrencies or NFTs\u201d as items you \u201cshouldn\u2019t publish on Steam\u201d on an official\u00a0support page<\/a> for game developers.<\/p>\n

We checked on Archive.org<\/a> for that same support page as of October 6, 2021, and the rule regarding blockchain, NFT, and cryptocurrency isn\u2019t there. It\u2019s a recent change to Valve\u2019s developer documentation.<\/p>\n

This policy change came to light when\u00a0SpacePirate Games, the developer of Age of Rust<\/em>\u00a0(a game that offers NFTs), tweeted<\/a> that Valve would be kicking existing blockchain games off the Steam platform:<\/p>\n

While it sounds like the developer has communicated with Valve regarding NFT-based games on Steam, it looks like Valve has made its decision.\u00a0\u201cWhile I\u2019m disappointed for Age of Rust<\/em> being removed, the point is more to the fact that Blockchain games as [a] whole are going to be removed. This is [a] setback for all,\u201d the company said in a follow-up tweet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve reached out to Valve for comment regarding this policy change, but we hadn\u2019t heard back as of publication time. We will update this piece if Valve responds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
