{"id":353846,"date":"2021-10-16T15:11:11","date_gmt":"2021-10-16T12:11:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/how-bob-mackie-created-iconic-dresses-for-cher-and-other-stars\/"},"modified":"2021-10-16T15:11:11","modified_gmt":"2021-10-16T12:11:11","slug":"how-bob-mackie-created-iconic-dresses-for-cher-and-other-stars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/how-bob-mackie-created-iconic-dresses-for-cher-and-other-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"#How Bob Mackie created iconic dresses for Cher and other stars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#How Bob Mackie created iconic dresses for Cher and other stars<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>In 1988, one of the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> stories of the year was a dress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, a dress donned by Cherilyn Sarkisian, a\u2009k\u2009a Cher (post Sonny), who attended the Oscars barely covered in some black netting, a few feathers and some very well-placed beads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Known as \u201cthe naked Cher dress,\u201d it was an ensemble that would go down in fashion history.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You could call it designer Bob Mackie\u2019s pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance \u2014 if you don\u2019t count the gown he designed, sewn to Marilyn Monroe\u2019s curves, when she crooned a sexually charged \u201cH<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y Birthday, Mr. President\u201d to John F. Kennedy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sequins, feathers and more than a touch of burlesque, with a barely covered tease of breasts, derrieres and lots of leg\u2014 all are a part of Mackie\u2019s signature look, even today at 81, making his designs both famous and historically infamous.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Art of Bob Mackie,\u201d by pop culture historian Frank Vlastnik and editor-author Laura Ross, (Simon Schuster), out next month, is a celebration of the designer\u2019s outrageous creativity, with hundreds of sketches and essays about the dozens of celebrities who have proudly worn his lusty designs over the past 50-plus years. The compendium is authorized by Mackie, with colorful, insider commentary by him, a foreword by Carol Burnett and an afterword by Cher \u2014 a 300-plus page testament to his singular talent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mackie designed \u201cas many as 60 to 70 costumes a week for 11 years,\u201d writes Burnett of her beloved eponymous TV show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo the math .\u2009.\u2009. He once promised her in the early days of \u201cThe Sonny &amp; Cher Comedy Hour\u201d that her gowns would have \u201cmillions of beads, and true to his word, there have been GAZILLIONS .\u2009.\u2009. sometimes with just a tiny bit of fabric, for the past 50 years,\u201d she writes. \u201cBobby, you are brilliant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A section entitled \u201cMackie in Judyland\u201d includes Mackie\u2019s original sketches of gowns and dresses for Judy Garland. Another called \u201cLucy in the Sky,\u201d details flamboyant outfits for Lucille Ball, who was, according to Mackie, \u201cdetermined to out-fly Mary Martin in Peter Pan, with these huge butterfly wings to flap.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mitzi Gaynor, Raquel Welch, Goldie Hawn, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Debbie Reynolds, Ann-Margret, Cheryl Ladd and Bette Midler all chose Mackie to be their designer, as well as countless Vegas showgirls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mackie was born on March 24, 1939, in Monterey Park, Calif., and brought up by his grandparents after his parents divorced. Looking back to those days, he attributes his \u201crelative solitude\u201d to the development of a vivid imagination. With a fashion show scheduled, she suggested adding a showgirl costume to the proceedings. Mackie submitted some 20 sketches and was selected. Years later, when Mackie \u201copened a show in Las Vegas, I made sure that teacher was there.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\">\n<blockquote><p>She wanted to wake people up (with) something that made everyone think she was nude.<\/p>\n<p><cite>Bob Mackie, on the famous dress he rendered for Marilyn Monroe<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Mackie\u2019s name first appeared in credits at the end of an episode of \u201cThe Judy Garland Show\u201d on TV in 1963 \u2014 credited as an assistant costume designer. But two years later, the credit at the end of a 1965 Danny Thomas TV special read \u201cCostumes Designed by Ray Aghayan and Bob Mackie.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The two became business and life partners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat Ray taught me about designing was that it was always about the stars and making them look good,\u201d he writes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And Mackie\u2019s hardly-there gowns for Cher always ignited a volcano. The one she wore for the Met Gala in 1974, arriving with her arm entwined with the designer\u2019s, was a sheer beaded number with feathered sleeves and feathered skirt; her whole body was there in all its glory for everyone to see, including her nipples, with no pasties. Jackie chose not to come, and Marilyn was introduced by Rat Pack member and Kennedy brother-in-law Peter Lawford, who called her \u201cthe late Marilyn Monroe,\u201d because of her well-known tardiness on movie sets. Tragically, she would die several months later at 36.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her flesh-colored gown was the star of the show, with 2,500 glittering rhinestones, and the whole affair had actually been sewn onto her body so that it \u201cfit her like a second skin every bit as miraculous as her first.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Marilyn had lensed a few scenes for George Cukor\u2019s \u201cSomething\u2019s Got to Give\u201d that would be her final film and she asked the film\u2019s wardrobe designer, Jean Louis, to help her create that \u201cunforgettable moment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mackie was Jean Louis\u2019 assistant at the time.
