{"id":354041,"date":"2021-10-15T21:15:21","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T18:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/boeing-pilot-who-tested-737-max-jets-before-crashes-indicted\/"},"modified":"2021-10-15T21:15:21","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T18:15:21","slug":"boeing-pilot-who-tested-737-max-jets-before-crashes-indicted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/boeing-pilot-who-tested-737-max-jets-before-crashes-indicted\/","title":{"rendered":"#Boeing pilot who tested 737 MAX jets before crashes indicted"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Boeing pilot who tested 737 MAX jets before crashes indicted<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>A former top pilot at Boeing who oversaw the testing of the 737 MAX jetliner has been indicted for allegedly deceiving regulators about a flight-control system later blamed for two crashes that killed hundreds of people.<\/p>\n<p>A federal grand jury in the Northern District of Texas indicted Mark Forkner, 49, late Thursday on six counts of fraud for allegedly providing investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration with \u201cmaterially false, inaccurate and incomplete information.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In an effort to save Boeing money on pilot-training costs, Forkner allegedly withheld key information about flight-control software that was later implicated in two infamous 737 MAX crashes, which killed a combined 346 people.<\/p>\n<p>Forkner could face up to 100 years in prison if convicted on all counts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis callous choice to mislead the F.A.A. hampered the agency\u2019s ability to protect the flying public and left pilots in the lurch, lacking information about certain 737 Max flight controls,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/former-boeing-737-max-chief-technical-pilot-indicted-fraud\">said<\/a> Chad Meacham, the acting US attorney for the Northern District of Texas,\u00a0in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The case is the first time an individual has faced charges related to the crashes. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Boeing-pilot-fruad-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Nadia Milleron, whose daughter Samya Stumo, was killed in the crash of  Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, holds a sign of crash victims.\" class=\"wp-image-19815593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Boeing-pilot-fruad-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Boeing-pilot-fruad-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/Boeing-pilot-fruad-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Mark Forkner allegedly withheld key information about flight-control software that was later implicated in two 737 MAX crashes.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Tom Williams\/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Forkner made an initial court <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance Friday in Fort Worth, Texas. In a statement, his lawyer disputed the charges and said his client is not responsible for the deaths of those killed in the two crashes.<\/p>\n<p>Forkner\u2019s lawyer, David Gerger, said the former Boeing chief technical pilot should not have been charged with fraud by US prosecutors and is not responsible for the two fatal 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government takes this case to trial, the truth will show that\u00a0Mark\u00a0did not cause this tragedy, he did not lie, and he should not be charged,\u201d\u00a0Gerger said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Boeing and Forkner told the FAA that MCAS would only activate when the 737 MAX was moving at certain high speeds. <\/p>\n<p>But a year later, Forkner discovered that the system could be triggered at slower, more common speeds. Upon the discovery, Forkner told a colleague in a message included in the indictment that he had \u201cbasically lied to the regulators (unknowingly).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Forkner failed to share the finding with the FAA and repeatedly recommended that mention of the system be deleted from a forthcoming regulatory report because it was \u201cway outside the normal operating envelope,\u201d according to the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>Any mention of MCAS was left out of pilot-training materials, putting lives at risk and defrauding Boeing\u2019s commercial airline customers, according to the indictment.<\/p>\n<p>The surprise activation of MCAS \u2014 in addition to other issues such as lack of training \u2014was later implicated in the 737 MAX crashes in 2018 in Indonesia, which killed 189\u00a0people, and 2019 in Ethiopia, in which all 157\u00a0people aboard perished.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment also included an internal Boeing email that suggests Forkner felt pressure to secure lower-level required pilot training, referred to as \u201cLevel B,\u201d for the 737 MAX that would save Boeing money.<\/p>\n<p>Forkner allegedly wrote in December 2014, \u201cif we lose Level B [it] will be thrown squarely on my shoulders. <\/p>\n<p>\u201d \u2018It was Mark, yes Mark!
