There have been more than a dozen spinoffs with varying degrees of success. Nearly 100 woman have held a piece of fruit and uttered a sassy tagline such as \u201cI won Miss USA, not Miss Congeniality\u201d (Kenya, Atlanta), and \u201cSoccer moms drive minivans, but this girl drives a Bentley\u201d (Peggy, Orange County). The show has given several aging actresses, among them Lisa Rinna and Denise Richards, gainful employment, and various cast members have made headlines for alleged crimes ranging from trespassing to money laundering. We were ready to kill the show.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s author, Dave Quinn, interviewed some 185 people for the exhaustive oral history, and he says just the first chapter on the origin of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> was initially 500 pages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I\u2019m] just giving everyone the space to say their piece,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a big difference between facts and feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The show\u2019s original producer, Scott Dunlop, first moved from Los Angeles to the Orange County enclave of Coto de Caza, Calif., in 1986. With a population of 15,000, Coto is one of the largest gated communities in the country, and Dunlop was fascinated by his WASP-y, conservative neighbors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe men would leave for work, and the women were left to run wild on \u2018the ranch\u2019 as they called it, playing golf and hanging out and shopping,\u201d says Dunlop. \u201cThey were all such unusual humans. Entertaining, but also kind of annoying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was struck by the archetypes he saw: tennis bitches, men of leisure, boomerang kids. Dunlop initially envisioned a short film, but as reality TV started to boom in the early aughts, he realized that format might be a better bet. It was my show,\u201d counters Vicki Gunvalson.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dunlop sides with Keough, who was his neighbor and one of the first people he met in Coto.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were perfect for television, really,\u201d recalls Dunlop of the Keough family. \u201cJeana came from Hollywood \u2014 she was a Playboy Playmate of the Year, she had been one of the muses in ZZ Top\u2019s music videos, but she was now working as a real estate agent. Her husband, Matt Keough, was a retired baseball player. They were always gone, and their three children sort of roamed the streets of Coto de Caza wild.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In early 2005, Dunlop put together a sizzle reel to sell the show using the Keough family and a bitchy tennis wife named Kimberly Bryant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cohen, who was in charge of production at Bravo at the time, was impressed. \u201cI watched and couldn\u2019t believe how sexy and <em>Californian<\/em> everybody seemed, how big their boobs were, and the way they spoke to their kids. Bravo wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal to women and tell their stories, too, but with an entirely different sensibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur women had the power,\u201d she says. \u201cThey were CEOs of their lives, come hell or high water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dunlop put out local <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper ads to find more subjects. One was answered by a boy named Michael Wolfsmith, who wrote about his boundary-lacking mother: Vicki Gunvalson. She would become one of the series\u2019 longest-running characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael wrote in, expecting he and his friends to do the show,\u201d Gunvalson remembers in the book. \u201cIn his letter, he talked about coming back home in between semesters of college to train with me to become a successful insurance agent. And Scott Dunlop contacted me saying, \u2018We want to talk to you! He found her in a beautiful 24-year-old from Peru named Jo De La Rosa. She was hesitant to join the cast, but her boyfriend, Slade Smiley, was 15 years older and, Dunlop says, \u201cwanted his 15 minutes wherever he could get it.\u201d (Fans of the show know that Smiley and De La Rosa broke up\u00a0and then did a spinoff show called \u201cDate My Ex.\u201d Smiley went on to become involved with Lauri first and another eventual Housewife, Gretchen Rossi. (He and Rossi are now engaged and have a child.)<\/p>\n<p>The original title of the show was \u201cBehind the Gates,\u201d but network execs thought it sounded too serious. At the time, both \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d and \u201cThe OC\u201d were very popular shows. Zalaznick came up with \u201cThe Real Housewives of Orange County\u201d and said it gave them the option to do other cities. Cohen was \u201cvehemently opposed,\u201d fearing it sounded awkward and thinking they would never do another city.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow wrong we were,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Shooting began in 2005, but the initial footage was quite disappointing and didn\u2019t ring true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe confessional interview where the ladies spoke straight to the camera weren\u2019t stylized \u2014 they weren\u2019t well lit, and the women didn\u2019t look their best,\u201d says Cohen. \u201cThe women also weren\u2019t going deeply into their emotions or being honest about what was happening with their friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was ready to shelve it and give up, but Zalaznick persisted, insisting they go back to shoot more, at a cost of about $140,000.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\">\n<blockquote><p>\u201cHer words created conflict. Conflict matters; conflict moves the story forward. We didn\u2019t really know that until Tamra came on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cite>Vicki Dunlop on Tamra Bailey<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201c \u2018Queer Eye\u2019 was dying. It had hit big and then fizzled quickly,\u201d she recalls. \u201cThe future of Bravo was very much hanging on \u2018Housewives.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank Lauren, and the Lord, that we didn\u2019t kill it!\u201d says Cohen.<\/p>\n<p>Bravo took more control over shooting and hired a new showrunner, Dave Rupel, who had a background in soap operas and could prove useful in developing characters and story arcs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>De La Rosa and Smiley came across as hammy, but Rupel wanted them to work because Smiley was more attractive than the other husbands and De La Rosa brought some much needed diversity to the show. Rupel realized that the key with them was to keep the cameras rolling.<\/p>\n<p>Once, one of his colleagues called worried about how staged and phony a breakup scene between them was playing. Rupel told her: \u201cJust let them do their shtick and then keep going. It will get real.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd sure enough, Jo was drinking \u2014 she had a huge cocktail \u2014 and suddenly, their breakup became very real,\u201d Rupel says. \u201cSlade couldn\u2019t resist taking potshots at Jo, and she started to get mad. That\u2019s what soaps do. I thought, \u2018Wow, we could do this forever.\u2019 \u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Still, it wasn\u2019t until Season 3 when Tamra Barney (now Tamra Judge) joined the cast that the show hit its stride, insiders say.\u00a0She practically demanded they put her on the show, calling producers after her interview and saying, \u201cDid I get the f \u2013 \u2013 king job or not?\u201d She went on to develop a major feud with Rossi, a younger Housewife who was then involved with a much older man with leukemia. Tamra made a habit of blurting out whatever was on her mind \u2014 making enemies in the process. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe called me an old lady and said she was going to come for my real estate business,\u201d says Keough. \u201cI wasn\u2019t too worried. Conflict matters; conflict moves the story forward. We didn\u2019t really know that until Tamra came on the show.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Viewership grew steadily. By Season 7,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/real-housewives-orange-county-ratings-303313\/\"> the show was bringing<\/a> in 1.36 million viewers in the desirable 18 to 49 demographic. <\/p>\n<p>It may have taken the over-the-top bitchiness to draw people in, but author Quinn insists that the show has actually been positive for women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur culture tends to throw women away in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>, but especially at a certain age,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen are you going to see a 50-year-old black woman like Kenya Moore celebrated in pop culture if not for the Housewives?\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
