\n In memoriam: The Woman Who Beat the Studios <\/strong><\/p>\n

Olivia de Havilland, who died this week at age 104, \u201cwas the last great living female star of the movies<\/a>\u2019 golden age,\u201d mourns Todd Purdum at The Atlantic. Her \u201cradiant visage and sinuous voice\u201d in such classics as \u201cGone With the Wind\u201d (1939) and \u201cThe Adventures of Robin Hood\u201d (1938) will captivate audiences for another century. \u201cYet de Havilland\u2019s most lasting impact on Hollywood history is lodged not on celluloid but in the less glamorous pages of California\u2019s law books.\u201d Discovered while she was still underage, de Havilland was \u00adensnared in the big studios\u2019 system of \u201cindentured servitude\u201d \u2014 punished for turning down lousy roles, suspended without pay and unable to exit her seven-year contract. In 1943, \u201cde Havilland filed suit under an obscure state anti-peonage law, which barred any employer from enforcing a personal-services contract for more than seven years.\u201d She won but was blacklisted for a time \u2014 before continuing her astonishing success streak. RIP.<\/p>\n

Media<\/a> watch: What Is Going On in America?<\/strong><\/p>\n

This weekend, members of a Louisville, Ky., \u201cblack militant group\u201d posed \u201ca list of demands\u201d to local businesses while marching with \u201cloaded guns\u201d \u2014 which, The American Conservative\u2019s Rod Dreher laments, is pure \u00ad\u201cmafia stuff.\u201d Seattle\u2019s city council, meanwhile, \u201cbanned the cops from \u00adusing pepper spray and less lethal means of protecting property from violent mobs,\u201d and its county government wants to \u201cabolish prisons\u201d in an \u00adattempt to dismantle \u201cwhite culture.\u201d This, even as hard-left violence escalates across the Pacific Northwest. But many Americans simply don\u2019t know what\u2019s taking place, because establishment media ignore or play down stories that go against the anti-cop narrative. Which raises a troubling question: \u201cHow can we know for sure\u201d what\u2019s happ<\/a>ening to America?<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Our Not-So-New Religion<\/strong><\/p>\n

The current \u201cwoke\u201d movement, which has swept American elites with \u201cbreathtaking speed,\u201d appears to be \u201ca new secular religion,\u201d Katherine Kersten argues in the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Yet the new public cult \u201celevates passion over reason and dogma over data\u201d and is \u201cdeeply intolerant\u201d \u2014 much like \u201cour nation\u2019s earliest religious zealots,\u201d the Puritans. \u201cParallels abound\u201d: Puritans believed that \u201chumans are inherently wicked,\u201d just as \u201cthe woke\u201d believe that whites are inherently racist, and both groups have the \u201cwitch-hunt mentality\u201d of \u201cdestroying the reputations and livelihoods of those who show the slightest hesitation to profess true doctrine.\u201d The movement\u2019s leaders, too, have the same goal as the Puritans: Dismantling \u201cthe sinful nation in which we live\u201d and building \u201ca new City on a Hill, made in their own image.\u201d<\/p>\n

Campaign desk: Joe\u2019s Veep Dilemma<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joe Biden is having a problem finding the \u201cloyal, trusted, experienced\u201d and \u201capolitical\u201d running mate he wants, reports Politico\u2019s Ryan Lizza. Ideally, the ex-veep would prefer \u201ca friend and confidante,\u201d but he doesn\u2019t have \u201cany previous deep relationship\u201d with any of his leading possibilities, except for ex-National Security Adviser Susan Rice, putting her in \u201cthe top tier of candidates.\u201d Many Biden campaign advisers, meanwhile, want the selection to be \u201cas safe as possible,\u201d leaving more left-wing candidates such as Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris as long shots and dark-horse politicians such as Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo as possibilities. Whatever happens, though, for the time being, none of the possible running mates is an \u201cideal, home-run choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: The Woke War on Faith<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe phenomenon of vandalizing and burning religious sites which is \u00adaccelerating in Europe has, like a virus, jumped an ocean and is now among us,\u201d fumes Samuel Gregg at Spectator USA. \u201cOver the past month, statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary have been damaged in states as far apart as Colorado, Missouri, New York, Tennessee and Massachusetts.\u201d The tendency reflects \u201cefforts by the woke left to force America to accept their version of history,\u201d in which Christianity, and Catholicism especially, is bizarrely cast as a villain. The wokesters \u201cwill settle for nothing less than submission to their [own] faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
