But is the outrage warranted? We don\u2019t think so. Here\u2019s why the notch makes sense.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"More_Screen_Less_Bezel\"><\/span>More Screen, Less Bezel<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The 2021 14\u2033 and 16\u2033 MacBook Pro refresh features the thinnest bezels on any MacBook Pro to date. The bezels are so thin that Apple decided that squeezing a 1080p FaceTime camera into the dead space wasn\u2019t an option, and so instead the MacBook Pro notch was born.<\/p>\n<p>This decision is best exemplified by contrasting 2020\u2019s 13\u2033 M1 MacBook Pro with the 2021 revision. In the older model, the laptop has a much thicker bezel at the top of the screen where the webcam is housed. It\u2019s around double the width of the bezels at the left and right edge of the screen.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-762773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-20-at-10.56.36.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"M1 MacBook Pro 13&quot; compared with M1 Pro\/M1 Max MacBook Pro 14&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"195\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rather than treating the notch as an imposition on available screen real estate, consider that the display has been extended well into bezel territory. Apple is delivering more screen space at the cost of the bezel, rather than a notch at the cost of screen space.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the alternative of a webcam at keyboard height (unflattering), a thicker top bezel, or no webcam at all; the notch comes off as a good compromise. It\u2019s also a minor sticking point in what will probably go down as the best MacBook Pro revision for the best part of a decade.<\/p>\n<p>The decision not to include Face ID is a disappointment for sure, but the notch likely paves the way for this to be added in a future revision. You won&#8217;t even have to press the Touch ID button to unlock your Mac.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"App_Developers_Must_Opt-In\"><\/span>App Developers Must Opt-In<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps the most valid criticism of the notch is that it eats into menu bar space, but it remains to be seen how much of an impact this will have on real-world usage.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has already confirmed that app developers will have to opt-in if they want the notch incorporated into their full-screen apps.
