“#Cuomo calls packed Chainsmokers Hamptons concert \u2018illegal & reckless\u2019<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday blasted a weekend Hamptons concert by The Chainsmokers where revelers openly flouted coronavirus social<\/a> distancing rules as he said that the state Health Department will launch an investigation into the matter.<\/p>\n

Online videos from the Southampton concert held on Saturday show \u201cegregious social distancing violations. I am app<\/a>alled,\u201d Cuomo said in a tweet, along with a now-viral clip showing massive crowds jamming out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department of Health will conduct an investigation,\u201d the governor wrote. \u201cWe have no tolerance for the illegal & reckless endangerment of public health.\u201d<\/p>\n

The charity concert \u2013 planned as a \u201cdrive-in\u201d with 500 cars and an estimated 2,000 people in the Water Mill hamlet off Millstone Road \u2013 was headlined by The Chainsmokers and featured opening acts by Southampton\u2019s Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman\u2019s band and Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon (aka DJ D-Sol).<\/p>\n

State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker earlier Monday sent a letter to Schneiderman, saying he was \u201cgreatly disturbed by reports concerning the \u2018drive-in\u2019 concert held in your town this past weekend, which apparently involved thousands of people in close proximity, out of their vehicles, a VIP area where there was no pretense of a vehicle, and general<\/a>ly not adhering to social distancing guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zucker fumed in the letter, \u201cI am at a loss as to how the Town of Southampton could have issued a permit for such an event, how they believed it was legal and not an obvious public health threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schneiderman put the blame on the organizers of the event during an interview with The Post Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe the conditions of the permit were violated,\u201d Schneiderman said, explaining that the town issued a special event permit for the concert that allowed a company called In The Know Experiences to run the event.<\/p>\n

Schneiderman, who estimated that about 3,000 were at the concert, said that each car at the event and its occupants were supposed to remain in a designated square on the ground order to social distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cars weren\u2019t going to be right next to each other. It was going to be like a checkerboard,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cThe design met the guidance \u2013 it was a drive-in event.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that did not happen, according to footage of the concert.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe organizer was supposed to make sure that people stayed in their square \u2013 they didn\u2019t have enough security,\u201d said Schneiderman.<\/p>\n

VIP areas where crowds formed near the stage during the show were \u201cnot part of the permit,\u201d said Schneiderman, who claimed, \u201cWe never would have permitted that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had conversations with the organizers making sure they were going to enforce the rules,\u201d the town supervisor said. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that they allowed that to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schneiderman said that when his band performed at the beginning of the night, \u201cThere was nobody in the front of the stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI stayed for a while and when I became aware of the VIP area, I told the two security guards from the organizers to stop,\u201d said Schneiderman, who added that he had to leave because his ride home texted him saying, \u201cYou have to come to the car right now. We have to leave,\u201d because his pal was having an \u201callergy issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schneiderman said he\u2019s conducting an investigation into the matter of his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to know why the town\u2019s police did not break up the VIP area,\u201d he said, noting that during the night police presence had to be \u201csignificantly\u201d increased to deal with the crowds.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never would have permitted the event,\u201d said Schneiderman. \u201cThe organizers will be cited for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Southampton Town Police Chief Steven Skrynecki told The Post that the crowds of people seen in the video tweeted by Cuomo was \u201cnot in play\u201d for most of the concert.<\/p>\n

The VIP area, Skrynecki said, was \u201cnot immediately the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe shut the event down at 10:30 p.m. between the police and fire marshals on scene,\u201d the chief said, explaining that, \u201cWe were getting a lot of noise complaints\u2026and the stage area was getting more congested with people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are disappointed in the organizers ability to deliver the product that they said they were going to deliver,\u201d said Skrynecki. \u201cSo that is part of the reason why we had to increase our police force and we were expecting them to be a lot more involved in COVID enforcement and to address COVID issues.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
