\n The North Carolina professor found dead in his home\u00a0\u2014 only days before he was forced to retire because of his racist social media<\/a> posts \u2014 died by suicide, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Mike Adams, 55,\u00a0 a criminology professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, was found dead alone in his home Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a friend called New Hanover County sheriff\u2019s deputies to check on him, The News<\/a> & Observer reports.<\/p>\n

Adams had been acting \u201cerratic\u201d in the past few weeks, during which he was \u201cunder a lot of stress,\u201d his friend told a dispatcher, according to 911 call records cited by the newspaper.<\/p>\n

Sheriff officials said foul play is not expected in Adams\u2019 death, which was ruled a suicide following an investigation, the newspaper reports.<\/p>\n

Adams, who reportedly reached a $500,000 settlement with the university, was set to retire on Aug. 1. He had been the target of several Change.org petitions calling for his ouster over \u201cmisogynistic, xenophobic, transphobic, homophobic, [and] racist rhetoric\u201d tweets, including calling people protesting George Floyd\u2019s police-custody death in Minneapolis as \u201cthugs looking for an opportunity\u201d to break laws without consequence.<\/p>\n

His social media presence prompted university officials to denounce his \u201chateful, hurtful\u201d language in a June 5 statement, saying his remarks were \u201cabsolutely reprehensible\u201d but protected by the First Amendment.<\/p>\n

Weeks later, university officials announced on June 29 that Adams decided to retire, effective Aug. 1, \u201cin light of the public attention generated\u201d by his contentious social media posts.<\/p>\n

Adams\u2019 neighbors, meanwhile, said they didn\u2019t know him well, but described him as an affable person who kept to himself, The News & Observer reports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was interested in talking to him once I found out exactly what he was all about,\u201d neighbor Bryan Hanley told the newspaper. \u201cI was like, \u2018How do you handle that much pressure on you? You know nationwide people turned against you. How do you handle something like that? How do you handle that kind of stress? Obviously, I wish none of this happ<\/a>ened, it shouldn\u2019t happen to anybody no matter how controversial you are.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
