Rather than focusing on the money, FSR senior editor\u00a0Christopher Campbell is more interested in the estimated attendance \u2014 or number of tickets sold. Because the value of money changes over the years, but the value of actual moviegoers remains the same. This week, we focus on the opening box office attendance numbers for Denis Villeneuve\u2019s Dune. Also: Wes Anderson\u2019s The French Dispatch, and Ron\u2019s Gone Wrong.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p><strong>Denis Villeneuve\u00a0<\/strong>hasn\u2019t directed a ton of features, and he\u2019s never been a huge box office favorite, but that doesn\u2019t make his success with\u00a0<em><strong>Dune\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and less significant. The filmmaker had his best opening weekend yet with the risky Frank Herbert adaptation: an estimated* gross of $40.1 million. That comes out to about 4.4 million people** who went to see the sci-fi film on the big screen. Villeneuve\u2019s last movie, the sequel <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em>, was his previous best at about 3.7 million tickets sold. It should be noted that both <em>Sicario<\/em> and <em>Enemy<\/em> debuted in very limited release, but they never went wide enough for me to highlight any attendance increase.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>is also <strong>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong>\u2018s best debut, but that\u2019s not saying a lot since he hasn\u2019t ever had a tentpole like this before (his previous best was for <em>Little Women<\/em>). What is most notable about the attendance being so high is that <em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>was also available to stream at home, on HBO Max, at no additional cost to subscribers, simultaneous with the theatrical release. And as the best Warner Bros. opener of the year,\u00a0<em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>had the highest attendance for any of their day-and-date theatrical and streaming titles, finally beating <em>Godzilla vs. Kong<\/em>\u2018s record (3.5 million) from March.<\/p>\n<p>For those wondering, yes Villeneuve\u2019s\u00a0<em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>also opened with a higher attendance than David Lynch\u2019s adaptation from 1984. That movie grossed $6 million in its first few days, on just 915 screens. Which is about 1.8 million tickets sold at an average cost of $3.36 apiece. The theatrical attendance for the new movie is also theoretically more than the 3 million households who tuned in for the first episode of the Sci-Fi Channel\u2019s <em>Dune<\/em> mini<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> of 2000. Of course, many of those households could have included multiple viewers. Last week, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/weekend-box-office-forecast-dune-and-rons-gone-wrong\/\">Box Office Pro posted<\/a> the industry prediction as being $40 million. But that was centrally within a field that marked the opening for anywhere between $35 million and $45 million. That was the same spectrum given in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/long-range-box-office-forecast-dune\/\">the site\u2019s long-range forecast<\/a> at the beginning of October. However, one week ahead of its release, the site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficepro.com\/long-range-box-office-forecast-marvel-studios-eternals\/\">updated its scope<\/a> to $42 million on the low end \u2014 above the actual result \u2014 and $52 million on the high end.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Reviews_vs_Audience\"><\/span>Reviews vs. Audience<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><em>Dune<\/em> had the best box office opening for Denis Villeneuve, but reviews for the movie (see ours here) rank fifth or sixth for the filmmaker, depending on the aggregate site. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/celebrity\/denis-villeneuve\">At Rotten Tomatoes<\/a>, its critic score is 83%. Behind career-best <em>Arrival<\/em>, <em>Incendies<\/em>, <em>Sicario<\/em>, <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em>, and <em>Polytechnique<\/em>. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.metacritic.com\/person\/denis-villeneuve\">On Metacritic<\/a>, the critic score is 75, behind all of those except <em>Polytechnique<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For both sites, the audience scores are actually higher, showing that viewers love <em>Dune<\/em> even more than critics. At Rotten Tomatoes, the score is 91%, almost 10% more than the critic score. On Metacritic, it\u2019s 8.3, which is similarly greater. Whether some of that audience voting included HBO Max streamers is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>For moviegoers only, specifically those attending opening night, they gave <em>Dune<\/em> a grade of \u2018A-\u2018 via polling conducted by Cinemascore. That\u2019s promising in terms of satisfaction and potential word of mouth. Previously, Villeneuve also received A- grades for <em>Blade Runner 2049<\/em> and <em>Sicario<\/em>. But his highly acclaimed and Oscar-worthy <em>Arrival<\/em> only received a \u2018B\u2019 grade. And <em>Prisoners<\/em> got a \u2018B+\u2019.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_it_enough_for_Dune_Part_2\"><\/span>Is it enough for Dune Part 2?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The important question is now whether or not Warner sees this as a big enough opening for them to greenlight <em><strong>Dune: Part Two<\/strong><\/em>. Denis Villeneuve\u2019s movie is widely considered an unfinished epic, and everyone who sees <em>Dune: Part One<\/em> is now dying to see how it concludes with <em>Dune: Part Two<\/em>. Compared to its $165 million budget, no the domestic debut for <em>Dune<\/em> is not much. But globally the movie has grossed more than it cost: $220.7 million. I think we\u2019ll get to see the <em>Dune<\/em> sequel before too long.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In other box office <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>\u2026<br \/>\u2013 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NoTimeToDie?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#NoTimeToDie<\/a> crossed $500M globally, becoming only the 2nd Hollywood film to do so in 2021 (behind F9 w\/ $716M). It will become the 3rd biggest Bond movie ever<br \/>\u2013 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HalloweenKills?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HalloweenKills<\/a> ($73M) becomes the highest grossing R-rated movie since BAD BOYS FOR LIFE <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DV9IeAc2N9\">pic.twitter.com\/DV9IeAc2N9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Erik Davis (@ErikDavis) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ErikDavis\/status\/1452298161356251137?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 24, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_French_Dispatch_Box_Office_and_More\"><\/span>The French Dispatch Box Office and More<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Three more new releases debuted over the weekend to a lesser note. <strong>Wes Anderson<\/strong>\u2018s <em><strong>The French Dispatch <\/strong><\/em>released on only about 50 screens. While it\u2019s estimated* $1.3 million gross (0.1 million attendance) was a bit higher than the $1 million expectation, that\u2019s still lower than Anderson\u2019s previous effort, <em>Isle of Dogs<\/em>, which opened on half as many screens. And while its per-screen average of $25,000 beat this year\u2019s record (previously held by <em>Venom: Let There By Carnage<\/em>), that was also smaller than Isle of Dogs\u2019 average.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow Fox-turned-Disney title <em><strong>Ron\u2019s Gone Wrong<\/strong><\/em>, which seemed to receive very little promotion ahead of its release, managed a fifth-place spot with an estimated $7.3 million. That\u2019s about 800,000 tickets sold for the animated feature. Despite Disney not spending a lot to advertise the movie, it wound doing better than expected. And word of mouth could help <em>Ron\u2019s Gone Wrong<\/em>\u2018s\u00a0continued attendance given that it received an \u2018A\u2019 grade from first-night moviegoers via Cinemascore.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, <em><strong>Becoming Cousteau<\/strong><\/em>, which received two Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations, opened in 15th place with just $111,000 from just 319 locations. The nonfiction feature from Oscar-nominated filmmaker <strong>Liz Garbus<\/strong>\u00a0shares a biographical look at the life and achievements of oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
