\n Instagram is looking to cherry-pick some of TikTok\u2019s most popular users in a bid to build buzz for its new copycat app<\/a>, a new report says.<\/p>\n

The Facebook<\/a>-owned photo-sharing app has offered big-name creators hefty payments to ditch TikTok and join Reels, a short-form video service it plans to roll out next month, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Some payments would be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the most money would go to influencers who post content exclusively to Reels. Others would be asked to share videos there first before uploading them elsewhere, according to the paper.<\/p>\n

Instagram has told creators over the past month that it wants to launch Reels with a bevy of exclusive content from high-profile users, the Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. The company has also reportedly offered to cover the costs of producing creators\u2019 videos while trying to keep terms of the possible deals under wraps with non-disclosure agreements.<\/p>\n

Instagram did not immediately respond to The Post\u2019s request for comment Tuesday morning. But Instagram spokeswoman Sarissa Thrower told the Journal that the company has \u201capproached a diverse range of creators about Reels in several of the countries where it\u2019s currently being tested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reels could reportedly benefit from TikTok\u2019s uncertain future in the US. The Trump administration is considering banning the Chinese-owned app over concerns that it could share user data with the Chinese government, which TikTok has pledged not to do.<\/p>\n

Some unnamed TikTok creators who were not offered cash from Instagram told the Journal that they would likely join Reels amid concerns about TikTok\u2019s murky prospects.<\/p>\n

In response to Instagram\u2019s reported poaching push, TikTok pointed to the death of Lasso, Facebook\u2019s earlier attempt at a short-video app that was wound down earlier this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven that Lasso had to shut down, it\u2019s not surprising to see Facebook is trying this tactic with a product tied to Instagram,\u201d a TikTok spokesman said in a statement. \u201cAt the end of the day millions of people truly love TikTok, and that\u2019s something that no amount of copying can overcome.\u201d<\/p>\n

TikTok also rolled out a $200 million fund last week to help creators make a living from their content. Money from the so-called \u201cCreator Fund\u201d will be distributed over the next year, the company said.<\/p>\n

Facebook shares were down about 0.3 percent at $232.70 as of 9:39 a.m. Tuesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
