We did the math<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>Tesla\u2019s deal with car-rental giant Hertz has generated some jaw-dropping numbers.<\/p>\n<p>The order of 100,000 <span>Tesla Model 3s is potentially the largest ever purchase of electric vehicles. <\/span><span>The announcement drove Tesla\u2019s market value beyond <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/businessNews\/idUSKBN2HF238\">$1 trillion on Monday<\/a> and pumped up Elon Musk\u2019s personal wealth up <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2021-10-25\/elon-musk-s-fortune-surges-to-281-billion-on-hertz-order\">by $36 billion<\/a>. The tycoon is now worth an eye-watering $289 billion. Our thoughts and prayers are are with Jeff Bezos at this difficult time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/l8c5ayh3on?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>These figures, however, barely scratch the surface. To understand the true enormity of the deal, you\u2019d need a team of math whizzes. Unfortunately, I\u2019m all you\u2019ve got \u2014 so strap in, number fans.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_deep_would_Elon_have_to_dig_into_his_pockets_to_buy_100000_Teslas\"><\/span>How deep would Elon have to dig into his pockets to buy 100,000 Teslas?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Elon Musk could buy an everlasting array of crap with his astronomical wealth. After the company\u2019s share price <span>surged nearly 13% on Monday, Musk\u2019s estimated net worth <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/elon-musk-net-worth-tesla-stock-surge-bloomberg-billionaires-index-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=T\">eclipsed the market value of Toyota<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"c-mrkdwn__br\" data-stringify-type=\"paragraph-break\"\/><span>With the entry-level Tesla Model 3 retailing at a suggested $39,490, Musk could snap up 100,000 of them for around $4 billion \u2014 just 1.38% of his net worth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_big_a_parking_lot_would_you_need_for_100000_Model_3s\"><\/span>How big a parking lot would you need for 100,000 Model 3s?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Now Musk owns 100,000 Teslas, he\u2019ll need somewhere to park them, so let\u2019s work that out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ownersmanual\/model3\/en_tw\/GUID-56562137-FC31-4110-A13C-9A9FC6657BF0.html\">Model 3 measures<\/a> 4,694 mm in length and 2,088 mm in width. Because we\u2019re feeling generous, we\u2019re gonna give each lucky car a parking space that\u2019s 6 meters long and 3 meters wide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>To fit in 100,000 cars, our parking lot will be 100 vehicles across and 1,000 cars deep.<\/span><span> That means we\u2019ll need a single-level parking lot of 1,800 km2 \u2014 just 300 km\u00b2 smaller than Monaco \u2014 and that\u2019s without building any drive paths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry though, Elon can drop each vehicle its space via some sort of SpaceX rocket. Or hyperloop. Whatever, he\u2019ll find a way.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Could_a_stack_of_100000_Teslas_reach_space\"><\/span>Could a stack of 100,000 Teslas reach space?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s try and work out what Musk would do next. When he\u2019s not working on cars, our beloved manchild focuses on\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/20\/tech\/elon-musk-neuralink-brain-chip-experts\/index.html\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/20\/tech\/elon-musk-neuralink-brain-chip-experts\/index.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">brain implants<\/a><span>,\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"c-link\" tabindex=\"-1\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/23\/cars\/elon-musk-robert-moses\/index.html\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/23\/cars\/elon-musk-robert-moses\/index.html\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\" data-remove-tab-index=\"true\">\u201crevolutionary\u201d subway systems<\/a><span>, and his <\/span>comedy career<span>. Oh, and space colonization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His SpaceX rockets have already sent civilians into Earth orbit. This presents us with an interesting question: could a tower made of Hertz\u2019s Model 3s have carried them further? <\/span>No. Absolutely not. No way. Not even close.<\/p>\n<p>A single Tesla Model 3 is 1.445m tall. If you stack 100,000 of them they\u2019ll reach 144.5km. That\u2019s high enough to reach the thermosphere, but it ain\u2019t gonna get you to space.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s a bit higher than Elon got when he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/news\/elon-musk-smoke-marijuana-60-minutes-interview-joe-rogan-watch-video-8673911\">tried to smoke weed<\/a> on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast (WA-HEY).<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter__right\" role=\"presentation\" data-qa=\"message_content\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__blocks c-message_kit__blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"c-message__message_blocks c-message__message_blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer\" data-qa=\"block-kit-renderer\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper--first\">\n<div class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\">\n<p>There you have it!
