\n Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday ripped Senate Republicans\u2019 newly unveiled stimulus plan as a \u201cnonstarter\u201d \u2014 and insisted it\u2019ll force him to layoff 22,000 city workers including first responders, teachers and sanitation workers.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnless this stimulus happ<\/a>ens in Washington on the level we need it to, we won\u2019t be able to save the jobs that deserve to be saved, we won\u2019t be able to restart the economy,\u201d Hizzoner said at his daily press briefing.<\/p>\n

He also slammed the package \u2014 dubbed the HEALS act for health, economic assistance, liability and schools \u2014 for slashing supplemental unemployment benefits, saying it comes at a time when New Yorkers need them most.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe plan will not work. It is a nonstarter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThink about the first responders, the health care heroes, think about the teachers, the sanitation workers,\u201d\u00a0 de Blasio added. \u201cAll the people we depend on who right now don\u2019t know if they\u2019re going to have their jobs in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio has previously said without a federal bailout, 22,000 city workers could be laid off to help plug the budget deficit caused by the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, he said layoffs \u201caffecting every single agency\u201d could begin as early as Oct. 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need this stimulus very quickly next few weeks to avert that,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t get help, we are out of options. We would have to move forward with those layoffs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell unveiled the HEALS act on Monday, which would provide another round of $1,200 stimulus checks to Americans, while calling for a reduction in the weekly unemployment supplement from $600 to $200, unless states submit a plan showing how they would cap benefits at 70 percent of pre-pandemic pay.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
