Both have strong advertising campaigns: NordVPN dominates every single medium out there, from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> videos to TV, and Surfshark is no slouch, either.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, we\u2019ll try to see past the marketing and figure out which of the two is the better VPN for you.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Surfshark_vs_NordVPN_Features\"><\/span>Surfshark vs. NordVPN Features<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We kick off our comparison by looking at the features Surfshark and NordVPN offer. The basics are all there for both, meaning you can select a server in any number of countries and connect to it through a secure tunnel. (That\u2019s a simplified explanation of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/133680\/htg-explains-what-is-a-vpn\/\">how VPNs work.) We\u2019ve had no significant issues using either service, but that doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t some differences, either.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Security_Encryption\"><\/span>Security &amp; Encryption<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The biggest difference between NordVPN and Surfshark when it comes to security is the default <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/211329\/which-is-the-best-vpn-protocol-pptp-vs.-openvpn-vs.-l2tpipsec-vs.-sstp\/\">VPN protocol each maintains. NordVPN\u2019s default is NordLynx, which is a proprietary protocol based on Wireguard, a cutting-edge protocol that guarantees both speed and security. Surfshark, on the other hand, has as its default IKEv2\/IPsec, which is fast but has some <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/security-gaps-found-in-ipsec-5a075b44609e\">security flaws<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In both cases, you can switch between the default protocol to something like OpenVPN, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>ly considered trustworthy, but we do feel it\u2019s a strike against Surfshark that it sets a questionable protocol as its standard.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s pretty much it for the bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>, though. Both services offer plenty of interesting security features that should help keep you safe, ranging from the standard, like a kill switch, to more advanced options, like multi-hop connections.<\/p>\n<p>The upshot is that both VPNs will keep you safe while online, though we do recommend switching protocols when using Surfshark. Other than that, when we tested the VPNs, both passed all the security tests we ran.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Speed_and_Server_Count\"><\/span>Speed and Server Count<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking of testing, we also ran speed tests on both NordVPN and Surfshark, and we weren\u2019t particularly impressed in either case. As we explain in our article comparing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/752270\/expressvpn-vs-nordvpn-which-is-the-best-vpn-for-you\/\">NordVPN vs. ExpressVPN, NordVPN\u2019s speeds boil down to whether or not you get a good server. If so, it\u2019s lightning-fast. If not, it slows to a crawl.<\/p>\n<p>Surfshark is more consistent, but its speeds can only be described as average, generally only offering about half the speed of what NordVPN\u2019s faster servers can deliver. While taking the slow-but-steady notion may be good advice in many other areas of life, it\u2019s unnecessary when it comes to VPNs as there are plenty of other services that offer both speed and reliability.<\/p>\n<p>The upside is that, if you just need a VPN to keep yourself safe online, then both services will have you covered with a nearby server. Both networks are extensive: NordVPN has over 5,000 servers in 60 countries, while Surfshark boasts 3,200 in 65 countries. With such a wide network, you\u2019re bound to find a server within a few hundred miles, especially if you\u2019re in Europe or North America.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Netflix_and_Other_Streaming_Services\"><\/span>Netflix and Other Streaming Services<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to use either NordVPN or Surfshark to get into other countries\u2019 Netflix libraries, then get ready to be dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed. A <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/747840\/netflixs-vpn-crackdown-isnt-just-blocking-vpn-users\/\">recent crackdown by Netflix has made it hard to watch Netflix with any VPN, but some have fared a lot better than others. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.expressvpn.com?offer=3monthsfree&amp;a_fid=howtogeek&amp;data1=htg&amp;data2=757119\">ExpressVPN<\/a>, for example, still manages it on some of its servers.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve heard NordVPN does relatively well with Netflix, but after testing several servers, we had no luck. Seeing how many servers there are and the trustworthiness of our sources, however, we\u2019re willing to still give it a half-hearted endorsement.<\/p>\n<p>Surfshark, though, seems to be struggling badly with Netflix\u2019s new VPN detection system\u2014one it didn\u2019t handle all that well even before the update\u2014so you may want to give it a pass if entertainment is the main reason you\u2019re signing up for a VPN.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Torrenting\"><\/span>Torrenting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Another important use for VPNs is torrenting, which both Surfshark and NordVPN can handle. NordVPN even has a whole suite of servers especially for P2P traffic. Though we\u2019re not sure if it matters whether or not you have special servers, we guess it\u2019s a nice touch.<\/p>\n<p>Surfshark seems to have advertised special servers in the past, but no longer does so. We assume this means you can use any server for P2P activities. In the end, though, all that matters is that you have a good connection speed and a working kill switch. If you want to torrent, either service will do.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Getting_Past_Censorship\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_5\">Getting Past Censorship<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The last feature we\u2019d like to go over is advertised rather heavily by Surfshark, namely the ability to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/720639\/how-to-use-the-internet-from-china\/\">get past China\u2019s internet blocks. This feature is called NoBorders, and we\u2019re not exactly sure how it\u2019s supposed to work: according to Surfshark, they are special servers meant to get you past censorship.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s pretty interesting, since, as far as we know, pretty much any server can get past a censorship block as long as its IP isn\u2019t being monitored by the Chinese government. Though we won\u2019t go so far as to say you shouldn\u2019t use Surfshark for this purpose, we do find this kind of advertising to be a little misleading. You don\u2019t need special abilities to get past censorship blocks.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the feature packages of our two contenders are very similar, at least on paper. However, in practice, NordVPN inches ahead thanks to better speeds and better Netflix access. There is a price to be paid for that, though, as you\u2019ll see in our next round.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Price\"><\/span>Price<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to pricing, NordVPN vs Surfshark proves an interesting choice: Surfshark may offer less impressive features, but is a lot cheaper at $2.49 per month on the two-year plan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/surfshark-pricing.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Surfshark pricing\" width=\"1284\" height=\"669\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>NordVPN may have better features in some areas, but at $3.30 per month when signing on for two years it\u2019s also a lot more expensive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757124\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/nordvpn-pricing.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"NordVPN pricing\" width=\"1000\" height=\"421\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>On top of that, here\u2019s another thing to keep in mind: when renewing NordVPN, you\u2019ll be paying $322 for the two-year plan as the initial payment is just a promo. Surfshark, on the other hand, just changes the initial $60 and changes it into a yearly payment after the first two years. Though both providers pull a bait-and-switch on you, Surfshark\u2019s isn\u2019t as bad.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to value, Surfshark is probably the better bet if all you need is some extra security and nothing else. However, if you want the full package, NordVPN is the better pick of the two and is well worth the extra 80 cents or so per month.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Interface\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_7\">Interface<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to ease of use, there\u2019s a lot to say for either service. We have always liked NordVPN\u2019s approach with its interactive map that allows you to select a server by either clicking on a country or selecting one from a list on the left of the screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/nordvpn-interface.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"NordVPN interface\" width=\"850\" height=\"619\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Settings are just as well laid out, with a nice menu that gives you a clear idea where things can be found. Generally, messing around with settings is pretty easy with NordVPN, and it usually explains what things are and what they do.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757122\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/nordvpn-settings.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"NordVPN settings screen\" width=\"861\" height=\"620\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Surfshark\u2019s main interface is just as good as NordVPN\u2019s. It may not have the map, but in daily use it\u2019s just as easy to connect to a server and get started. However, server connection times are a bit slow.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/surfshark-interface.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Surfshark interface\" width=\"869\" height=\"472\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The settings menu isn\u2019t as good: It\u2019s a lot more basic than NordVPN\u2019s, and there\u2019s less explanation, too. While you could argue it makes Surfshark easier to use because there are fewer options, we prefer it when our software is a bit more on the tweakable side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-757120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/surfshark-settings.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Surfshark settings screen\" width=\"879\" height=\"499\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to ease of use, both are great, but we prefer NordVPN a little because it has a better settings menu and connection speeds.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Privacy\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_8\">Privacy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When discussing privacy, both Surfshark and NordVPN come out looking like solid <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/717096\/what-is-a-no-log-vpn-and-why-is-that-important-for-privacy\/\">no-log VPNs. Both claim not to keep logs, never share information and everything else we\u2019ve come to expect from VPNs.<\/p>\n<p>As we have discussed before, though, all you can do is take a service at their word that they\u2019re not sharing or selling data, it\u2019s practically impossible to prove it, or enforce it: Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, and NordVPN is based in Panama. As both services are happy to tell you, this means they\u2019re far from FBI warrants requesting users\u2019 data, but also from regulatory oversight.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/surfshark.com\/privacy-policy\">Surfshark\u2019s privacy policy<\/a> is a robust, comprehensive document. We like its attention to detail, with our favorite feature being the massive table of the types of data it handles, what is stored, what is shared, and with whom. Too few providers of any stripe inform customers this thoroughly, and we appreciate it a lot.<\/p>\n<p>NordVPN, in contrast, is a lot more terse. Rather than a table, its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.nordaccount.com\/legal\/privacy-policy\/\">privacy policy<\/a> goes through data types in a list, which works just as well, we guess, but doesn\u2019t give the same overview. One advantage NordVPN does have over Surfshark is that it undergoes regular <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tomsguide.com\/news\/independent-audit-confirms-nordvpns-no-log-policy-for-the-second-time\">security audits<\/a> of its workings, while Surfshark only <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/surfshark.com\/blog\/surfshark-server-infrastructure-undergoes-independent-audit\">has them<\/a> for its server architecture.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Verdict\"><\/span>The Verdict<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Making the choice between NordVPN and Surfshark depends on what you need it for.
