change, announced Thursday by Facebook<br \/>\n        FB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205064656\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.14%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       founder and Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, relegates Facebook to one of the company\u2019s three major platforms \u2014 which also includes Instagram and Whats<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a> \u2014 rather than the overarching brand amid whistleblower revelations and regulator recriminations.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Meta doesn\u2019t exactly roll off the tongue, but Zuckerberg &amp; Co. hope it helps rebrand the beleaguered company and reposition it as a metaverse player. Whether that is enough to rehabilitate the company\u2019s tattered reputation is unlikely, branding experts told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook\u2019s name shift was announced by Zuckerberg, chief executive and co-founder, during the company\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/facebookrealitylabs\/\" class=\"icon none\">Connect conference<\/a> Thursday. The change reflects the company\u2019s hard pivot into what it calls the \u201cnext evolution of social <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>,\u201d where mixed reality brings people together to play <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s, exercise, watch concerts together, work remotely, and communicate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can\u2019t possibly represent everything that we\u2019re doing today, let alone in the future,\u201d Zuckerberg said. \u201cOver time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we\u2019re building toward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zuckerberg did not say if Facebook\u2019s stock ticker would change. The ticker META is already used by the Roundhill Ball metaverse ETF<br \/>\n        META,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/206566216\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.47%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       but other companies that have changed their name have maintained their original ticker, including Google parent Alphabet Inc.<br \/>\n        GOOGL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202490156\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.54%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n        GOOG,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205453964\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.41%<\/bg-quote>\n      <\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>Metaverse is the \u201cnext chapter of our work,\u201d said Zuckerberg, who predicted 1 billion people will be part of this virtual world within the next decade. In the process, he outlined a slew of apps and hardware under development to achieve an immersive new world in a few years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve gone from desktop to web to phones from text to photos to video, but this isn\u2019t the end of the line,\u201d Zuckerberg said. \u201cThe next platform and medium will be even more immersive and embodied Internet where you\u2019re in the experience, not just looking at it, and we call this the metaverse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in rebooting one of tech\u2019s best-known names, the company could confuse consumers and open itself to ridicule. Immediately upon the overhaul, Meh-ta was trending on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacebook will become a branded arm as will Oculus and any other metaverse extensions,\u201d Tim Bajarin, chairman of Creative Strategies, told MarketWatch ahead of the event. \u201cIf managed correctly, it sets up their future road maps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name change amounts to slapping a fresh coat of paint on a defaced brand name, says Rebecca Biestman, chief marketing officer of Reputation.com. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we don\u2019t know how long this rebrand has been in the works, Facebook\u2019s rebrand seems to be a reaction to a steady decline in its brand\u2019s reputation,\u201d Biestman told MarketWatch. \u201cTruly innovative companies don\u2019t wait for an impending event to update their brand, rather they typically use rebranding as a strategy to maintain a competitive advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The embattled Zuckerberg \u2014 whose company faces a torrent of lawsuits, investigations, and proposed legislation aimed at regulating its expansive platforms \u2014 said during an earnings call Monday that Facebook is shifting its focus to adults 18-29. \u201cWe are retooling our teams to make serving young adults our North Star,\u201d he said of the yearslong effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the coming years, I expect people will transition from seeing us primarily as a social media company to seeing us as a metaverse company,\u201d he said on the call.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more: Opinion:\u00a0Dear Facebook: No one cares about Oculus; give us Instagram revenue!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the new name \u201cseems to be a very small\u00a0way to respond to calls [to break up Facebook], albeit without actually changing anything,\u201d Umang Shah, head of global digital at Medidata Solutions, told MarketWatch. \u201cAt worst, it\u2019s an attempt at distraction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead of a \u201cconfusing name change,\u201d Facebook should focus on\u00a0addressing\u00a0criticisms\u00a0of how it filters and\u00a0distributes\u00a0content,\u00a0said Shah, who previously held social and digital marketing roles at Microsoft Corp.<br \/>\n        MSFT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207732364\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.14%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Walmart Inc.<br \/>\n        WMT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/207374728\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.28%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       and Campbell Soup Co.<br \/>\n        CPB,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202107764\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+0.50%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p>The social-networking company continues to be assailed for its treatment of content and data, and for ignoring clear signs internally that the digital platform is harmful \u2014 especially to children. This week, Sens. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Rep. Google became Alphabet Inc., Apple Computer Inc. was pared to Apple Inc.<br \/>\n        AAPL,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202934861\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.51%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Snapchat Inc. was shortened to Snap Inc.<br \/>\n        SNAP,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205087158\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.26%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       While the latter two moves simplified messaging, the Google-Alphabet change continues to confound consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Segall, who came up with the \u201cThink Different\u201d marketing campaign for Apple and put the \u201ci\u201d into iPhone, says a name change won\u2019t change anything. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have mountains of trouble to deal with,\u201d he says. \u201cChanging the hearts and minds of billions of users<strong> <\/strong>with a new title does not do it. To get there, they need to make fundamental organizational changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it could all blow up in Facebook\u2019s face and become a \u201cNew Coke\u201d moment.
