This entry looks at the new Lightyear trailer from Pixar and considers how it suggests a thirsty infatuation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, really, who can blame them?&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>What the hell goes on when we turn our backs on our toys? The original <strong><em>Toy Story<\/em><\/strong> proposed the question and answered it by revealing the generational anxieties between a cowboy and a spaceman, Woody and Buzz Lightyear. Westerns were out; <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> fiction adventure was in. A raggedy pull-string doll couldn\u2019t possibly compete with an action figure featuring more points of articulation than good sense. But what Woody had going for him was awareness. He knew his role as a toy, whereas Buzz Lightyear thrived in a delusion, believing desperately in the plot that some manufacturer scribbled on his package.<\/p>\n<p>When Woody freed Buzz\u2019s mind, the pathetic toy spiraled into an existential crisis. Who am I? What\u2019s my purpose? Twenty-six years and three sequels later, the original Buzz is still trying to process that bubbling confusion. Although, let\u2019s stop right there for a minute. Our Buzz, it turns out, is not the original Buzz. He was a toy based on a real person? Or, at least, he was a toy based on a popular sci-fi film that Andy presumably watched before the events of the first <em>Toy Story<\/em> began?<\/p>\n<p>Pixar has chosen to splinter from the <em>Toy Story<\/em> franchise with <strong><em>Lightyear<\/em><\/strong>, and \u201cthe sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear \u2014 the hero who inspired the toy \u2014 introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Lightyear_Trailer_Sure_Does_Look_Familiar\"><\/span>The Lightyear Trailer Sure Does Look Familiar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Lightyear<\/em> trailer dropped this week, and it\u2019s flashy, overly rendered, and far more serious than many were seemingly expecting. Featuring the voice of <strong>Captain America<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Evans<\/strong> (although he barely gets in a mutter here), <em>Lightyear<\/em> immediately drew comparisons to Pixar\u2019s Disney-owned sibling brand, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it is freaking a few folks out.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lightyear | Teaser Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BwPL0Md_QFQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Okay, that\u2019s a long leap from the wide-faced, big-eyed, dopey can-doism perpetrated by our Buzz. This Lightyear is dogged determinism, channeling the space race heroics of Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Carol Danvers. And, yes, several shots recall sequences from the lives of Marvel\u2019s two captains.<\/p>\n<p>Lightyear putting his eyes on his suit for the first time, echos the moment in <strong><em>The Avengers<\/em><\/strong> when Steve Rogers gazes forlornly at his new, S.H.I.E.L.D. sanctioned Captain America uniform. The scene where Lightyear wistfully ogles his shuttle through the window seems tethered to <strong>Captain Marvel<\/strong> peering from her Kree homeworld apartment highrise. There\u2019s even a bit where Lightyear (and a robot partner) peer over a rock in the same fashion Iron Man does during his bombastic coming-out party in Gulmira.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there\u2019s a lot of intense, purposeful staring. That\u2019s how you know Lightyear is a hero. He\u2019s thinking real hard, taking in as much information as he can, processing it, and putting his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>-face on before going out there and saving the day. Champions don\u2019t just punch hard, they think hard, they stare hard, they walk hard (uh, sorry, wrong movie, but also, yeah, that too).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Buzz <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Lightyear?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Lightyear<\/a> and Captain America parallels <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KY4bdQc9Jc\">pic.twitter.com\/KY4bdQc9Jc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lee On Rum (@MumOnRum) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MumOnRum\/status\/1453359106740342788?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 27, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Examing_the_Human_Buzz_Lightyear\"><\/span>Examing the Human Buzz Lightyear<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Pixar pushing <em>Lightyear<\/em> as an earnest adventure story a la <strong><em>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em><\/strong> rankles because it negates Buzz\u2019s <em>Toy Story<\/em> therapy. We\u2019re back in the delusion, the fantasy our beautifully gullible action figure fought to shed. Wr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing him within a Marvel Studios aesthetic feels like strapping Buzz into a straight jacket. We don\u2019t need an origin story; we\u2019ve got enough of those.<\/p>\n<p>Since the film was first announced in 2020, a nervous shiver has rippled throughout the internet. And Pixar and Chris Evans are utterly aware of that restless strain. Last December, the actor <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisevans\/status\/1337204197641629696?lang=en\">assured his Twitter followers<\/a> that this Lightyear is not our Buzz, \u201cThis is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The HUMAN Buzz Lightyear. Huh. So, he\u2019s a real dude? With a chin like that?<\/p>\n<p>Not only is he a real dude, but we know Lightyear\u2019s blood type. If you zoom in on the shot in the trailer revealing his dog tags, it\u2019s right there in cold steel: O Positive, the most common blood type. He\u2019s an everyman right down to his blood cells. Pixar wants us to look at this Lightyear the way we would Captain America or Captain Marvel. He\u2019s lionhearted, one of Earth\u2019s mightiest offerings.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">And just to be clear, this isn\u2019t Buzz Lightyear the toy. If Pixar delivers a heartfelt, action-adventure romper the way they did with <em>The Incredibles<\/em>, <em>Up<\/em>, and <em>Onward<\/em>, then our worries are a moot point. And considering that the studio holds more wins than losses, we really shouldn\u2019t doubt <em>Lightyear<\/em>\u2018s quality.<\/p>\n<p>There is a longing to be out there in the stars again. The final frontier has returned. Outerspace exploration inevitably leads to Innerspace contemplation. We want what Captain Kirk, Peter Quill, and Carol Danvers found in deep space: meaning, purpose, escape from this burning third rock from the sun.<\/p>\n<p>The Lightyear we witness in this trailer is clearly looking for something. Again, so much staring! The gaze indicates an emptiness within, a void that requires filling. This longing is felt by every one of us, and it\u2019s at the center of the original <em>Toy Story<\/em>. We are meant for something; we just gotta go find what that something is.<\/p>\n<p><em>Lightyear<\/em> could be Pixar\u2019s <em>Star Trek<\/em>, and not <em>Captain Marvel<\/em> or whatever. They\u2019re using the Marvel Studios aesthetic as a shorthand, indicating an adventure saga slightly aged up from their usual adventure sagas. This seriousness contradicts the <em>Toy Story<\/em> style, and that is initially disagreeable but not necessarily detrimental.
