Legal experts have proposed breaking up the business, implementing stricter privacy legislation, creating new federal agencies, and auditing the company\u2019s algorithms.<\/p>\n<p>Haugen has made some eye-striking suggestions of her own. She snubbed calls to break up Facebook and suggested the company\u2019s former employees could help oversee the business. That\u2019s the kind of scrutiny that even Facebook could support.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the social network has itself <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/about.fb.com\/news\/2020\/02\/online-content-regulation\/\">called for further regulation<\/a> of online content \u2014 with the obvious hope of guiding the rules. Facebook can also draw on its enormous resources to challenge proposals it doesn\u2019t like.<\/p>\n<p>In the US, the path towards new regulation will likely be a long one. Facebook\u2019s focus on profit over health has drawn comparisons to Big Tobacco. But it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/10\/09\/technology\/facebook-big-tobacco-regulation.html\">took more than a decade<\/a> to turn a<span> whistleblower\u2019s revelations about tobacco harms into meaningful regulation of the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A more urgent concern for Facebook may be the potential increases in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-whistleblower-hearing-threats-lawsuits-ag-investigations-congress-analyst-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=T\">class-action lawsuits and probes by state attorneys general<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Metaverse\"><\/span>The Metaverse<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Have you heard the exciting <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> about the Facebook rebrand? The social media giant has renamed its holding company as Meta.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The names of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>s that we build\u2014Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp\u2014will remain the same.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Facebook (@Facebook) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Facebook\/status\/1453795117685346306?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 28, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The shift is similar to Google\u2019s reorganization under the Alphabet name<span>. While the Facebook app will keep its current name, the company\u2019s individual units will become subsidiaries of a single umbrella business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That move may lead to tighter integration of Facebook\u2019s multiple services, which could make it harder to break them up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Facebook will also hope that the new name leads people to associate the company\u00a0with the metaverse, rather than just social media and all its ills. Indeed, <\/span>Zuckerberg said as much in a July interview <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22588022\/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-ceo-metaverse-interview\">with The Verge<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We <span>will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The new name alone won\u2019t transform public perceptions, but the focus on the metaverse could provide a welcome distraction from Facebook\u2019s social media horror show.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Growing_old_disgracefully\"><\/span>Growing old disgracefully<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: rgba(46, 146, 255, 0.027);\">Facebook\u2019s woes haven\u2019t yet extended to the company\u2019s financial performance. The company\u2019s shares are <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/oct\/20\/facebook-plans-to-change-its-name-as-part-of-company-rebrand-report\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">up 25% since January<\/a>, and its <span>profit topped $9 billion during its most recent financial quarter, exceeding<\/span>\u00a0investor expectations.<\/p>\n<p>There is, however, a big financial threat on the horizon: <span>Facebook is struggling to recruit and retain young users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An internal study found that young people perceive Facebook as a <span>\u201cboring, misleading, and negative\u201d platform for \u201cpeople in their 40s and 50s,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/22743744\/facebook-teen-usage-decline-frances-haugen-leaks\">The Verge reports<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Teenage users of the Facebook app in the US have shrunk by 13% since 2019, according to the company\u2019s own research. They\u2019re projected to drop by 45% in the next two years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those demographic changes will be a big threat to the company\u2019s future. In response, Facebook is exploring new ways of attracting younger users.<\/p>\n<p>However, some of Facebook\u2019s ideas suggest the company doesn\u2019t quite understand the audience. Take this extract from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/facebook-instagram-kids-tweens-attract-11632849667\">an internal report<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Are kids are [sic] using Messenger Kids during playdates, and if so, how are they using the app and talking about the app? Is there a way to leverage playdates to drive word of hand\/growth among kids?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The document brings to my mind the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/how-do-you-do-fellow-kids\">\u201cHow do you do, fellow kid\u201d<\/a> meme, but instead of donning a baseball cap and skateboard, Facebook\u2019s got a wiretap and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-14267007\">Anders Breivik\u2019s manifesto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s moves suggest that Facebook will grow old disgracefully.
