Infuriatingly, the Microsoft Store kept giving me an error while upgrading to Windows 10 or 11 Pro\u2014but I finally found an obscure fix that actually works.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, if you search for the error message, you\u2019ll be presented with a ton of articles from other sites that give generic advice that makes no sense. Reboot your laptop, they said, so I promptly rebooted only to find that Windows 11 suddenly thought I was on an unlicensed Enterprise copy and forced me to completely roll back to Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-765211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-1.18.04-PM.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Windows 11 saying you don't have a valid digital license or product key.\" width=\"650\" height=\"251\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The moral of the story is not to trust random sites on the internet when it comes to fixing problems on your laptop.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> We\u2019re assuming that you actually followed the process to upgrade from Windows Home to Windows Pro using the Windows Store and you have an actual license.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Fix_Error_Code_0x80070005_and_Upgrade_to_Windows_10_or_11_Pro\"><\/span>How to Fix Error Code\u00a00x80070005 and Upgrade to Windows 10 or 11 Pro<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The solution is just what you\u2019d expect from Microsoft: You\u2019re gonna have to hack the registry and then do a reinstall. Technically, it\u2019s called \u201cReset Your PC\u201d these days, but it\u2019s the same thing, sort of.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_tip\"><p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Before you even read any further, the time has come to back up all of your important files. Hacking the registry and doing a factory reset is probably going to delete those important photos of your lunch or that one thing you saved that one time. Even reading the rest of this article is probably not advised if you don\u2019t have a backup. Okay, are you done? Keep reading then.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, you\u2019ll want to pop open the start menu, search for \u201cRegistry Editor\u201d or \u201cregedit\u201d, and then browse down to the following key:<\/p>\n<p><code>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Double-click \u201cProductName\u201d on the right-hand pane, and change the value from \u201cWindows 10 Home\u201d to \u201cWindows 10 Pro\u201d. (Or, if you\u2019re trying to fix Windows 11, just change it to \u201cWindows 11 Pro\u201d).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-765213 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-1.24.02-PM-e1635531416987.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Set the &quot;ProductName&quot; value in the Registry Editor.\" width=\"650\" height=\"329\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The next step is a factory reset of your computer where Windows will be tricked by the registry hack into thinking that you\u2019re already using Windows 10 Pro and set it all up for you.<\/p>\n<p>Launch the Settings <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a> (you can press Windows+i to do it) and head to Update &amp; Security &gt; \u00a0Recovery or just type \u201cReset This PC\u201d to the search box. If you\u2019re a wizard, you can use the Command Prompt to factory reset instead, but we\u2019ll assume you\u2019re not and would rather do it graphically.<\/p>\n<p>Tap the \u201cGet Started\u201d button under \u201cReset this PC\u201d, choose the \u201cKeep my files\u201d option (unless you want to delete all your files), and proceed through the wizard to do a full factory reset of your PC.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you are presented with the option to do a cloud download of the install files, choose that option.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-765214 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-29-at-1.29.36-PM-e1635531428450.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select &quot;Keep my files&quot; to avoid deleting all your files.\" width=\"650\" height=\"370\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve made it through this process, which will probably take a while, there\u2019s just one more step: activating Windows again. Open up the Settings app and head to Update &amp; Security &gt; Activation, or just type \u201cActivation\u201d into the search box in the Start menu to find these options.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be presented with an error message saying that you\u2019re using Windows 10 or 11 Pro, but that it isn\u2019t activated. You\u2019ll then have to click the \u201cTroubleshoot\u201d link to force Windows to try and activate it. You\u2019d think that Windows would be smart enough to do this on its own, but you\u2019d be wrong.
