{"id":360473,"date":"2021-10-29T17:16:03","date_gmt":"2021-10-29T14:16:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/halloween-solar-flare-headed-for-earth-could-disrupt-power-grid\/"},"modified":"2021-10-29T17:16:03","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T14:16:03","slug":"halloween-solar-flare-headed-for-earth-could-disrupt-power-grid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/halloween-solar-flare-headed-for-earth-could-disrupt-power-grid\/","title":{"rendered":"#Halloween solar flare headed for Earth could disrupt power grid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Halloween solar flare headed for Earth could disrupt power grid<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The sun launched a massive solar flare yesterday that\u2019s headed in Earth\u2019s direction \u2014 the strongest storm seen in the current weather cycle.<\/p>\n<p>The volley of radiation may trigger the northern lights if it collides with our atmosphere, and could cause major issues for power grids, experts suggest.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which tracks the sun\u2019s activity, captured an image of the event at 11:35 a.m. ET Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>It has already caused a temporary, but strong, radio blackout in parts of South America, according to the US Space Weather Prediction Center.<\/p>\n<p>The flare is the result of a coronal mass ejection \u2014 a huge expulsion\u00a0of plasma from the sun\u2019s outer layer, called the corona.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/svs.gsfc.nasa.gov\/13982\">blog post<\/a>, NASA said the \u201csignificant\u201d flare has been classified an X1.<\/p>\n<p>Flares are ranked by letter, with the biggest labeled as \u201cX-class.\u201d The smallest flares are \u201cA-class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Higher numbers designate more intense flares. NASA logged an X28 in 2003, though an X1 is still a significant eruption.<\/p>\n<p>The flare is expected to hit Earth over the weekend, meaning it could land on Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tamitha Skov, a space weather physicist, said on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>: \u201cA direct hit for\u00a0Halloween! They affect our planet\u2019s magnetic field, which in turn can disrupt power grids and communications networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth\u2019s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground,\u201d NASA said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever \u2014 when intense enough \u2014 they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, due to the flare\u2019s intensity, any disruption it causes is likely to be temporary.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, larger solar flares have wreaked havoc on our planet.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, a strong solar eruption shot so many electrically charged particles at Earth that the Canadian province of Quebec lost power for nine hours.<\/p>\n<p>As well as causing issues for our tech, they can cause harm to astronauts working on the International Space Station, either through radiation exposure or by interfering with mission control communications.<\/p>\n<p>The Earth\u2019s magnetic field helps to protect us from the more extreme consequences of solar flares.<\/p>\n<p>Weaker solar flares are responsible for auroras like the northern lights.<\/p>\n<p>Those natural light displays are examples of the Earth\u2019s magnetosphere getting bombarded by solar wind, which creates the bright green and blue displays.<\/p>\n<p>The sun is currently at the start of a new 11-year solar cycle, which usually sees eruptions and flares grow more intense and extreme.<\/p>\n<p>These events are expected to peak around 2025 and it\u2019s hoped the Solar Orbiter will observe them all as it aims to fly within 26 million miles of the sun.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
